What makes you think that the banning of alcohol would be any different' It has been tried before and failed, there is no doubt that it will fail again. Alcoholic beverages became illegal in 1919 and only lasted until 1933. It was expected to lower crime rates and improve society as a whole, although this law did the complete opposite of what they intended. It increased crime rates as a black market had developed virtually overnight. If alcohol becomes illegal again the same thing is bound to happen. Uncertainty about quality is likely to be greater in a prohibited market. Consumers cannot sue the manufacturers of faulty goods or complain to government agencies without incriminating themselves. As seen during the prohibition of alcohol, the health of people who drank alcoholic beverages from the black market decreased because there was no quality control. Thousands of people were poisoned by the impurities in illegal alcohol. Participants could not use the legal and judicial systems to resolve disputes and subsequently seeked other methods such as violence. You can talk all you want about the harmful effects of alcohol, but alcohol has actually been found to be quite beneficial to health in small amounts. I believe drinking should be a choice, I mean, who is the government to decide what we can and cannot ingest' The main reason why the case of alcohol is different from that of other drugs is a social one rather than the empirical nature of the drug. It is all about socialisation. Alcohol has more positive social effects than other drugs when used sensibly. There are many reasons why people drink, many doit makes them more confident and ‘come out of their shell.’ And also generally heightens sociability between different people. Taking away the privilege of being able to drink is completely unfair. There should however be a tax imposed on such products which may have the added benefit of deterring teenagers and people from low socioeconomic statuses from getting it. Not only would prohibitions such as this one encroach civil rights to an unacceptable degree but it would also put thousands of people out of work, leaving a substantial amount of people unemployed and potentially costing the government lots of money in unemployment benefits, such as Centrelink. The alcohol industry is huge and there are not good enough reasons for wreaking havoc on the world’s economy; it would leave too many people without jobs. What’s to stop people from breaking the law and brewing their own beer and making wine themselves. It can easily be done at home. If this law is imposed, people ARE going to result to doing this, because it is seriously not that hard. Or people could drink Listerine and other mouthwashes' Oh that’s right alcohol will be banned, so there goes so many more other companies which could be shut down. Furthermore, Alcohol should not be banned. People are going to find ways of getting alcohol, they may even make it themselves. It is such a big part of life in many cultures. What Australian man doesn’t like to have a mate over for a barbie and a few beers' And of course women love to have a glass of wine or champagne with their dinner every now and again.
