SHC 32: Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s setting. 1 Understand what is required for competence in own work role 1.1 Describe the duties and responsibilities of own work role. In my setting I am involved in planning meetings and I help with the weekly planning to help cover all the areas of learning. I help to set up in the morning and set up adult- led activities and carry them out. I have been given the opportunity to write in children’s daily dairies, pass information to parents about their child’s day also I have been given the opportunity to write observations on children. I would prepare snack for the children at snack time this can be anything from cutting up fruit to buttering crackers or toast. I will supervise the children at snack time to ensure that the children all get the same amount of snack and to make sure they have a drink, even if they don’t want snack. I would help keep the setting clean by keeping the kitchen area hygienic e.g. cleaning surfaces, washing up the pots after lunch and tea. I would keep other areas of setting tidy e.g. picking up toys to help minimise accidents happening in workplace. I would hoover up the rooms once all the children have gone home also I would empty all the bins at the end of the day to keep the setting hygienic and to stop them from overflowing. I would change babies’ nappies to help them stop getting nappy rash or becoming ill or I will change children’s clothes if they are wet or soiled. I would interact with children e.g reading them stories, helping the children make dens, build towers, singing, craft etc. I carry out circle time with the children and I would say hello to them individually and let them each talk about an object they have brought in and this is also a good time to introduce new children to everyone in the setting. I help with headcounts throughout the day to ensure that all children are present in the setting. I would help with risk assessments by checking equipment and resources and I would report this to my supervisor. 1.2 Explain expectations about own work role as expressed in relevant standards. As a practitioner there are specific legal requirements which I am legally obligated to stick to. There are overall general legal requirements, specific legal requirements and statutory guidance. These all contribute to the development and safeguarding of children and young people within my setting. Here are some examples of policies and requirements: Early Years Foundation Stage As a practitioner I work within the guidelines of the EYFS this enables me to follow certain rules to offer assurance to parents that their children will be able to achieve the five ‘Every Child Matters’ outcomes of: * Staying safe- In my setting who have a gate which is locked at all times and also the front door has a lock and bolt to keep children safe at all times. Risk assessments are carried out every day to make sure that the equipment/ resources that children have used are safe for them. * Being healthy- In my setting we provide children with healthy snacks e.g. five pieces of fruit and water is provided also by keeping the children happy within the setting so their emotional well-being is important. * Enjoying and achieving * Making a positive contribution * Achieving economic well-being Setting the standards For the encouragement of learning, development and care young children receive when they are attending a setting which is not their family home, to ensure that no child gets left behind and that all children receive opportunities to grow. Equal opportunities To make sure that no child is discriminated against because of their ethnicity, culture or religion, own language, family background, learning difficulties or disabilities, gender or ability. Partnership working That a good partnership with parents are established by building positive relationships with them- This is done in my setting by meeting and greeting the parents at the door with a smile on your face also by sharing information with the parents about their child by daily dairies and learning journey’s to show they development within the setting. Developing good partnerships with colleagues as well. Quality and consistency Regular inspections by Ofsted are carried out to ensure that settings are providing high quality care and learning. Through the settings policies and procedures I am able to carry out my job role confidently as this will give me the focus to carry out certain tasks.
