Expectations about my own work role as expressed in relevant standards
As a childminder there are specific legal requirements which I am legally obligated to adhere to. There are overall general legal requirements, specific legal requirements and statutory guidance. These all contribute to the development and safeguarding of children and young people within my setting. Below I have listed some examples of this.
Early Years Foundation Stage
As a childminder I work within the guidelines of the EYFS this enables me to follow certain rules to offer assurance to parents that their children will be able to achieve the five ‘Every Child Matters’ outcomes of staying safe, being healthy, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution, and achieving economic well-being by:
Setting the standards
For the encouragement of learning, development and care young children receive when they are attending a setting which is not their family home, to ensure that no child gets left behind and that all children receive opportunities to grow.
Equal opportunities
That no child is discriminated against because of their ethnicity, culture or religion, own language. Family background, learning difficulties or disabilities, gender or ability.
Partnership working
That a good partnership with parents, professionals and settings is established.
Quality and consistency
Regular inspections by Ofsted carried out to ensure that settings encapsulate both care and learning.
Future learning
To ensure that activities are planned around the individual child and to carry put regular observations to enhance the child’s development.
As a childminder I have a legal obligation to safeguard and promote the welfare of children within my setting.
I have policies and procedures to follow if I am concerned about the safety and welfare of any children that attend my setting.
I have a policy for Health & Safety of which is updated when necessary, I carry out risk assessments daily, weekly and monthly. This ensures that my setting is secure and safe. When I go an outing risk assessments are carried out in advance if possible. I always ensure that I carry emergency numbers, mobile phone and my first aid kit. I always ensure parents have signed a permission form.
I have an equal opportunities policy which is given to all parents, which stipulates that every child that attends my setting will have equal opportunities regardless of any learning or disability they may have.
I have a policy which explains that if parents want to lodge a complaint it outlines the procedure and also highlights that it shall be investigated within 28 days of receiving the complaint.
It is my sole responsibility to obtain personal information relating to a child before attending my setting to ensure I can create a record. For example (name, DOB, emergency contact details, food allergies, parents and emergency carers, health requirements, legal and parental responsibility details).
I am responsible for keeping records on medicines by obtaining permission from parents to do so.
I am responsible for promoting good health therefore I must take the relevant steps to prevent the spread of infection, and take appropriate action when children are ill. I do have a policy to outline this to parents.
It is my duty to promote healthy eating; therefore I ensure that the children that attend my setting receive nutritious, balanced and healthy foods. Fresh water is always made available.
I ensure my setting is a non-smoking environment. I have a policy in place to reflect this.
I have a behaviour policy in place and adhere to it all times.
I hold an up to date paediatric certificate, enhanced CRB, Level 2 food safety in catering certificate.
I am aware of the Childcare Act 2006 and also the Health and safety at Work Act 1974.
Before a child attends my setting I give out my ‘parent pack’ which has all my policies and procedures this helps me to ensure that I meet current standards. I ensure these are looked at an updated when necessary and that all parents are also given the updated versions.
