1.1: Explain what is meant by: Diversity, Equality, Inclusion, and Discrimination. Diversity This can refer to the differences in values, attitudes, cultures, beliefs, skills and life experiences that each individual has in any group of people. In the UK, framework emphasise the importance of developing every child’s sense of identity and promoting a positive sense of pride in each child’s family origins. Meggitt, C (2011, P.32) Therefore people need to start with themselves because young children may develop a good sense of belonging to their local community and will understand and respect different cultures. Equality The state or quality of being equal; correspondence in quantity, degree, value, rank, or ability. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/equality ) This means that everyone don’t have to be treated the same. People might have different needs, opinions, situations and ambitions. Therefore as a practitioner has a big part I supporting children and young people to live the way they value and choose but let them be “themselves” or be different if they want to. On the other hand every individual have every equality of opportunity. Inclusion This means that a process of ensuring equality of opportunity to children and young people, it shouldn’t matter about their disabilities or disadvantages. Therefore every individual has a right to have their need met in every single way possible. Every individual are seen as a part of a community even if they need particular help to live a full life in the community. Discrimination This may occur when people may be treated less favourably, it might be of their negative view of someone’s characteristics. Therefore this is a negative view but based on people stereotyping that hasn’t got a factual based. However children might be discriminate against other children by their differences. So this could be name-calling and teasing, this might be directed to children who are fatter or thinner than other children in a group or maybe wearing different clothes.
