Shattered_Nightmare

Shattered Nightmare His precious wineglass shattered against the veranda. Blood dripped from the small slice across her cheek caused by the ricochet. She lay on the floor in the corner of their elegant balcony, curled up into a delicate ball incapable to retaliate against his attack. His voice boomed like clapping thunder and every insult felt as if lightning was thrashing her body. His eyes were cold and emotionless, like a murderer who felt no pity for his victims. She attempted to think of a better time before this, but the pain of the present was too much to bare. There was no beating. No physical attack. However, the verbal abuse and emotional trauma was far worse than any physical pain a simple human would have to suffer. The offensive slurs that screeched from his lips echoed in her mind. The words of her assumed betrayal and infidelity held her heart in a death grip. She raised her tense hands and held them over her ears, trying to block out his screams. Her head throbbed while the pain intensified with each insult. She didn’t want to hear anymore. He was wrong. She didn’t betray him. She didn’t sleep with his agent. She simply had coffee with him to discuss his birthday surprise. Her husband had always been the jealous type, but she had always stayed loyal to him. Solely devoted to him. Were there rumors going around that made him snap' Was it the fact that she arrived late from work for the last week' She just wanted to make him happy; that’s all she ever wanted for her one and only love. She shut her eyes tight, so she couldn’t see his face. The eyes of her husband were void of all emotion. He may have acted distant sometimes, but his eyes always revealed his feelings. Always. They were what scared her the most just now. She couldn’t stand to see her husband as this raving madman. She wanted to run, run far away, but her body was frozen to the veranda deck. Every muscle in her petite frame shook. She never imagined that he would lash out at her like this. Thunder crashed above which began the downpour. The rain was a symbol of the moment; it was cold and cruel. It attacked the earth, hoping to drown the people on its surface. The rain wanted to clear the earth of all evil. She could feel the vibration of his footsteps. Her heart jumped, knowing he was walking towards her. He still had that unemotional glaze over his eyes. She couldn’t see it, but she could feel it. The death glare he was sending towards her, looking down upon her, seeing her as scum, a slut. Her satin black dress was soaked through and through and her hair was dripping wet. The rain hid the tears pouring from her eyes, which she was thankful for. At least that part of her dignity she still possessed. The footsteps stopped. Her eyes shot open and she gasped when she noticed he was right in front of her. He was standing right overtop her. The wife, using her shaky weak arms, tried to crawl backwards to get away. However, she wasn’t moving; she couldn’t escape. She looked all around to find an opening, but she was stuck in the corner. The balcony frame at her sides, and he was in front of her. There was no way out. She felt like a cornered mouse, right before the cat ate its prey. Mrs. Reams panicked. She threw her arms violently and desperately to push herself through him. She ran. Ran as fast as she could, but crashed into the other side of the terrace frame. He was running after her, she knew it, but she had to get away. She climbed onto the ledge and jumped. The fear of losing her life to her love frightened her so much, she’d rather take it herself. As Mrs. Reams fell, she saw many good memories flash through her eyes; her marriage, making love to Robert, her child’s birth, Jake on the swing set, Jake’s graduation, and finally Robert’s gentle eyes. Smiling, she held her hands to her heart, knowing her husband didn’t strike her, like they both had dreadfully feared. She waited to die, but nothing happened. She waited to crash into the rough cement road, but she never did. Suddenly, a cold clammy hand rested on top her own. The Mrs. rose from under her covers, bumping heads with her husband. Her forehead stung, but the pain numbed when she saw him. Robert was falling with her' No. She attempted to run again, but he grabbed her arm, pulled her into a hug, and wrapped his arms tightly around her. “Honey, it wasn’t real. It was a nightmare. I could never hurt you…”
