This achievement standard involves previous viewing and study of a visual text (eg film, television programme, drama production, or electronic text such as a website), or listening to and study of an oral text (eg radio programme/drama, or audio performance), and writing an analysis of aspects of the text.

Explanatory Notes
1. This achievement standard is derived from English in the New Zealand Curriculum (EiNZC), Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 1994, up to and including Level 7.

2. Analyse means showing engagement with the text at a reader level and discussing specified aspects of the text(s) offering supporting points, with detailed reference to the text(s). The discussion should be communicated clearly and coherently.
Specified aspects of a visual or oral text includes methods or procedures used in crafting and shaping text, eg structure, method of narration, sound features (such as music, sound effects, dialogue), oral features (such as tone, expression, pace, stress, volume) and visual features (such as camera techniques, lighting, props, costume, colour) and could include discussion of aspects such as theme(s), characterisation, setting, context (social, political, or historical), and positioning of the audience.
3. Convincingly could include accuracy, comprehensive detail, precision, persuasiveness, and/or cogent points made.
4. Visual or oral text could be a film, television programme, drama production, electronic text (eg website), radio programme/drama, audio performance.
5. The text analysed at this level should be of sufficient depth and complexity to enable the development of a full and detailed analysis.
6. In the study of the text, students should have the opportunity to view the visual text or listen to the oral text more than once, ie a one-off viewing/hearing may not be sufficient to develop a full and detailed response.
Quality Assurance
1. Providers and Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before they can register credits from assessment against achievement standards.
2. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against achievement standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those achievement standards.
