Mastin SCI/275 November 20, 2011 Kari Murabito Environmental Final Energy sources like coal and oil are nonrenewable because there is a limited supply of them and they do not replenish themselves. Nonrenewable energy sources are depleting quickly and becoming harder to find. With this limited supply not only are the resources becoming harder to find and more expensive, but there is also an increasing need to find other renewable energy resources that are effective and efficient. While we currently have some renewable energy resources, they are not efficient and effective, and while we continue to research and improve upon these resources we must conserve our energy supplies so we don’t deplete them. Energy conservation not only affects our day-to-day lives, but it also affects the wildlife and the environment as a whole. Energy conservation reduces the amount of resources used which preserves the natural makeup of the earth. Energy conservation also reduces the amount of pollutants that are put into the environment. This reduction means less pollutants put into the air, and therefore less damage to the ozone layer, plant life, crops, and wildlife. It also means less ground pollutants are put into the soil and water supply. This reduction leads to less damage to plants, crops, and wildlife as well. The reduction of these pollutants and conservation of these resources extend the amount of time that we can safely inhabit the earth. While I understand that our generation will be long gone by the time that these resources are exhausted, it is important to take this issue seriously and make a real effort to conserve energy for our future generations. The overuse of nonrenewable energy resources has tremendous negative impacts on the earth and everything in and on it. This overuse lowers the quality of life for humans, plants, and animals, and it reduces our lifespan. It also contaminates plants and crops and endangers them. The earth itself is being destroyed by the pollution produced and the way we strip these resources from the earth. Energy conservation reduces all of these negative impacts and prolongs the live of the earth and every living organism on it. There are a lot of different sustainability plans for conserving energy that range from things that every individual can do at home, to plans that involve a global effort. Globally there are efforts to set new standards that will keep factories and businesses from releasing pollutants when refining and producing energy from nonrenewable resources. On a national level things like cash for clunkers have been initiated to aid Americans in obtaining newer and more efficient vehicles that will produce fewer harmful contaminants into the environment. On an individual level we can all do things like better insulating our homes. The sustainability of energy conservation plans is completely achievable, but it requires the cooperation of everyone not just a few people. My plan for sustaining energy conservation in my area is to push conservation education for every community member, and to ensure that everyone knows the importance of it, as well as to ensure that completely understand the impact that energy conservation can have. This will be accomplished through flyers, informational public meetings that will be offered at different times of day to help ensure that everyone is educated and has an opportunity to voice their concerns and ask questions. The issue of energy conservation will be addressed by researching all of the causes of nonrenewable energy pollution, as well as the benefits and effects of energy conservation on the earth and every organism on it. The E.P.A. will also be consulted and requested to have a topic familiar representative at the meetings. With the advice and consultation of the E.P.A. and other programs that have been developed, there will be an education program developed that will inform the community of what energy conservation is, its importance, its affects, and all of the easy things that can be done to conserve energy. These educational sessions will be held at different times to try to allow all individuals the chance to attend. To get the proper information for the class and flyers the E.P.A. will be contacted and consulted to ensure that the proper information is being given out in the proper way. The city council will be presented with the idea and asked for their support in making this plan happen. The local news media will be contacted and asked to run an informational story about the plan and the meeting times. The local printing company will be contacted to print up the flyers, and volunteers will be sought out to help circulate the flyers throughout the community. The research will be completed within the first three months, and the council will be contacted within two weeks of the completion of the research. The printing company will be contacted directly after the council has been consulted, and the educational sessions will begin as soon as possible. The benefits of this plan are endless, and impact every organism involved. This energy conservation plan benefits the local wildlife and plant life because the conservation reduces the amount of energy used and reduces the amount contaminants released in to the atmosphere. This benefits all organisms in this area, and the reduction of pollutants helps the rest of the environment and the ozone layer. There are challenges to this plan that include the need for the cooperation of the E.P.A., city officials, and the local news media. The other big challenge of this plan is that it requires the participation and commitment of all community members. This plan requires the assistance of the local government, the E.P.A., local media, and the entire community. I know that energy conservation may not be an ideal idea for some individuals, but it is something that we must do to ensure the life of our earth. Energy conservation does not require grand gestures by everyone; we can all easily do things to conserve energy. Actions as simple as changing what kind of light bulbs we use can make a big difference. Also, reducing the temperature on your furnace will make an impactful difference on the amount of energy used.
