I believe that I would be an excellent candidate for the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana scholarship given that my chosen career path to be a nurse will enable me to fulfill my passion to help others, to expand my knowledge base, and allow me to give back to my community. My current job, personal life experiences, and the fact I would be a third generation nurse in my family has also helped play a substantial part in shaping me to become a nurse, along with giving me a wealth of knowledge, resources, and experience. Presently, I work fulltime in the ICU at Howard Regional Health System as a secretary/ monitor tech. I enjoy working there because I am able to see critically ill patients progress to a state where they can be transferred/discharged to their families. Unfortunately, I have also been witness to those who do not get to return home or who have no family. I believe that with the unique experiences I have gained through my work I have been prepared more about what to expect upon completion of my nursing program then most. I am a single mom who works full time to help provide for my family and my educational expenses. I have also had the very emotional and unfortunate personal experience with the recent diagnosis of breast cancer for my mother, which has prepared me to be more understanding towards patients and families when they are in a similar situation. All of these experiences have helped to drive me to become a nurse. I have faced many challenges, balancing family, work, and school. I have a grandmother, aunt, sister, co-workers that are nurses who are wonderful and that have influenced my life. I would one day like to give back to them what they have given me by becoming a nurse who will be patient, kind, and who will care for her patients as if they were my family or friend. I believe to be an outstanding nurse that sets you apart from others is one who has adopted this philosophy. I know that when my goals are realized, I will be able to provide something meaningful to all of the patients I care for.
