Understanding how duty of care contributes to safe practice
1/explain what is meant to have a duty of care in own work place
2/explain how a duty of carer contributes to the safeguarding or protection of individuals.
Unit 4222-304
Duty of care is a practice in place to both protect the service user and staff member.
All children at Pebble Brook have a right to be safe, and treated with dignity and respect, along with a right to be protected from sexual, physical and emotional harm.
The approach taken at Pebble Brook School is
• Staff who come in to contact with the service users are CRB registered.
• Full risk assessments are conducted to ensure that each service user’s placement is correct for the student’s needs
• Risk assessments are updated regularly to ensure their duty of care can still be met.
• A full training program is in place and monitored to certify all staff are fully up to date with good practice i.e. child protection training, fire training, team teach fist aid.
• Confidential information is kept safe and access is only open to appropriate staff.
• All service users are required to read student files to ensure that all student needs are met.
• A service user a right to believed
• To work in an anti bullying/racist and prejudiced environment
Duty of care is addressed to other areas such as a child’s right to be heard in private and if necessary appropriate action to be taken, logged and reported to a manager.
Safeguarding is a structure in place to protect all parties, staff must be seen to conduct them selves in a professional way, and not taking risks by putting themselves in a vulnerable situation. If a service user has been known to make allegation, do not put yourself in a position of working alone with them, even if you have worked with them for years and you feel you have a special relationship with them. Never give out medication alone.
All staff need to observe and monitor each other as a course of practice, report any observed bad practice.
Safeguarding of service user a lot more complex
Children and young people all have a fundamental right to be safe and secure and be given the opportunity to develop their full potential, they have a right to feel loved and valued, be supported by a network (parents/carers/social clubs/school/families) that will support the them in an reliable and friendly relationship, without fear of abuse or neglect.
The Government defines safeguarding as
• Protection from maltreatment
• Preventing impairment of children’s health or development
• Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
• Enabling those children to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully
The above information taken from working together to safeguard children
found on the internet
Within the School and Boarding sections all staff members are accountable for the safeguarding of the students/boarders it is part and parcel of the job, even the most minor observation could lead to nothing or spark a chain resulting in the prosecution of individuals; it is a part of the job we all agree to at the outset of working with children but it needs to be handled in the correct way.
Protection of individuals
Keeping with in the school bounties we as staff members are presented with around 100 student each day we have a duty of care to each and every way we have, duty of care to report any concerns we may have about a child or team member i.e. we are not happy with the way a fellow team worker dealt with a student or you have noted that a child in your class has presented them self with the same cloths for the past 2 weeks and you feel they have not been washed, the procedure in both cases are very parallel
• Report you concerns to your line manager ASAP both verbally and followed up in written report.
• Do not let personal feeling affect your reporting
• Do not ask any leading question to the individual
• Do not talk about the case to anybody else
• Do not judge until you know the full facts
• If you’re not happy with the outcome report the incident again to a higher level.
As with all staff members at the school duty of care, and safeguarding must be adhered to, ensure a safe environment for the individuals within the school environment. .
