Unit 2: Duties and responsibilities 1.1) My duties are to keep all children in the setting safe and secure by understanding and knowing * Health and safety procedures * Safe guarding * Child protection * First aid * Confidentiality It’s my responsibility to make sure I know all of these fully and that I have a full understanding of the nursery system this is important in case things occur and need to be dealt with by following these procedures. I must respect the confidentiality of information received within the setting and keep it within the setting to protect children in the setting . I must be able to provide comfort and show affection to poorly and upset children, maintain hygiene to the standards given e.g. wearing gloves and aprons when dealing with nappies and washing hands after changing nappies and before dealing with food and encourage children to do things alone e.g. washing hands, tidying up and completing puzzles etc. . I have to plan and take part in activities that involve all the children in the nursery for example reading books, sponge painting and outdoors activities. I welcome and greet parents when they drop their children off and pick them up so I am able to build a relationship with parents I also help children understand the routine in the setting for example sleeping pattern, lunch, dinner and outdoor play times. I’ve got to work alongside other colleagues and help settle the children at story time and snack times I also have to help prepare the tables and help dish up meals for the children and try help them feed themselves so that they learn a bit of independence. When working in the nursery I have to deal with situations like children fighting and not sharing toys I would have to get down to their level and talk to them calmly and try to help them understand that they need to share the toys in the nursery this is important to teach children to share as they will need to know how to take turns. At nap times I’d have to help get the children to sleep on the mats by tapping their backs. It would be my responsibility to know all the children’s names so that they don’t feel less valued than others. I would have to know where all the evacuation points are in the nursery in case of emergencies. 1.2) The expectation of a practitioner is to become a good reliable source this involves being trustworthy, being able to build a good relationship with children and parents so that you are able to gain their trust also being encouraging towards children in their learning. When being a practitioner you are meant to work alongside other staff members, parents and carers so that you are able to fully understand the child and to help promote the child’s learning and development. This will show the child that you are valuing them so that they become more confident and to boost their self-esteem. Also the expectations that are to be done in placement at a relevant standard is to supervise children fully at all times so that all children are safe and not in any danger in or out outside of the setting this is important as children don’t recognise risks for example climbing up a high climbing frame they won’t understand that they may fall of and hurt themselves this is the main bit of the child protection act. Communication is important when being a practitioner as you will need to talk to children to help them learn and understand you will also need to talk to parents to inform them on their child’s progress or if there are any concerns about a child and you will have to other members or staff to share ideas and information. An expectation that is to be done in a placement is to be fully aware of confidentiality which means what goes on in the setting stays within the setting. This is important when working with children as you should always maintain confidentiality so that the children are safe and secure. If confidentiality is breeched then this could cause a child to be in serious danger. We must respect parents’ wishes. We should treat all children equal and not any different from others as this can lead to a child feeling isolated, upset, left out and depressed. As a practitioner we should be a good role model for the children this means having good attendance, always on time and respect so that the children learn from us for the future parents will not be happy if their child picks up bad habits from members of staff e.g. swearing or spitting. Children pick up things easily so we need to work in a professional manner e.g. using manners.
