Same Sex Marriage Brandon Lane Com 140 3/14/2010 Karen Robinson While there is much debate on same sex marriage, advances in the laws of many states are making it much easier for gay couples to get married today. Advancements in federal and state laws are making it possible for gay and lesbian couples to get married and share some of the benefits as male/female couples have. This debate has been going on since the 1970’s and today we can already see the changes that have taken place. Another matter on this issue is the way society looks at same sex couples wanting to get married. In 2004 the law for same sex couples to marry in Massachusetts was legalized. Six months after this began 11 more states passed the bill as well. The amendments were passed in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Ohio, Utah, and Oregon. As there were many complications that did arise, activist filled challenges to the amendments in Georgia and Oklahoma. In Louisiana, a judge struck down a constitutional same sex marriage ban approved in September of 2004, on the grounds that it was improperly dealing with more than one issue by banning not only same-sex marriage, but also any legal recognition of partnerships or civil unions. Louisiana's constitution requires that amendments be limited to a single-subject. Three other states that also have single subject requirements that make the laws more crucial are Georgia, Ohio and Oklahoma. These states face legal challenges similar to the ones that are incorporated in Louisiana. City officials in Portland Oregon married nearly 3,000 same-sex couples in the spring of 2005, before a judge put a temporary hold on the law. Several months later national and local gay rights groups were determined to open the bill back up in Oregon. They raised and spent millions of dollars, but were unsuccessful to change the amendment, which lead to the nullification of the 3,000 same-sex marriages. After this problem came about 11 more states filled amendments, this included California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Washington. Most of the suits were set up when a Massachusetts case filed by seven same sex couples who argued that the Bay State Constitution guaranteed them the right to marry under fair treatment. Another issue that does come to mind is the way that society or everyday people are handling the issue. Peoples religious views tend to take over the thought process of this subject. Most people think of same sex marriage being a bad thing, because of how they were raised or brought up. I think that gay couples want the same rights and benefits as heterosexual couples do. They also want it to be known to society that they are a married couple and not just a couple who has sex. I think this is important so more people can realize the importance of everyone’s feelings. I think that gay marriage is defiantly worth fighting for. I think this will show people in society that gay and lesbian couples take marriage just as serious as anyone else. There is not going to be a change unless everyone in the gay community works together to make the change happen. All in all I believe that not allowing gay couples to have the same rights as any other couple is a form of discrimination, and that is what gay couples and individuals are trying to get across to society today. If you stop to think of what major causes and effects would occur to allow gay marriage there really is no real good reason. As there is still so much work to be brought to the attention of each State, one question to ask yourself is that, should someone be judged on the preference of sex they choose to wed' Discrimination as a whole needs to end and the first step in doing so is for everyone to support the people with differences worldwide. Oregon’s Same Sex Marriage Rate | Count | Percent | Total | 2968 | 100% | Male/Male | 869 | 29.3 | Female/Female | 2099 | 20.7 | The Chart shown is just of one state that currently allows same sex marriage. As you can see the Female rate is over double the amount of males. This is believed to be because it is easier in society for two females to wed versus two males. This pie chart shows the current statistics of same sex marriage by age in all the states that allow. The numbers grow higher and higher each year showing that the trend is not going away anytime soon. The graph and table both show reliable information. This will help in supporting some of the main details plan to provide for my audience and readers. It will also strengthen my arguments on why same sex marriage should be passed in every state in the near future. References
