Executive Summary
Sweetr Candy Company invited Contest ‘R Us to present a proposal to implement an employee contest aimed at their Halloween selling season. Contest ‘R Us researched incentives for Sweetr Candy Company employees to earn by increasing their own sales. Contest ‘R Us overall goals are to increase sales, both throughout the contest and steadily in the future. Our hope is that the prizes offered will be enough motivation for our salespeople to increase their sales throughout the fall. Our plan to increase sales beyond the contest is giving away quarterly prizes for the region’s top sellers. Another goal we would like to achieve is to increase moral throughout the entire company. By offering a regional prize it encourages teamwork in each region with the hope that they will work together and become closer both personally and professionally. Additionally, asking for each region to come up with their own team name will hopefully be something fun to bring the participants together, and give them more of a sense of belonging. We are hoping to achieve these overall goals by creating prizes that will motivate the salespeople to work together and make the company better as a whole.
While we want the company to improve, we also find it important that our salespeople improve as individuals. By offering prizes we are hoping that each salesperson will work harder to increase their clientele and sales. By implementing the weekly updates our hope is to encourage everyone as an individual to be competitive with his or her coworkers. We are also hopeful that, individually, each salesperson has fun and learns to be a better salesman.
As a group we decided that there were several key factors in making our sales contest an effective stand out. First and foremost we wanted to create an exciting and seasonally themed contest that would immediately draw attention and differentiate our contest and company from other contests the Sweetr Candy Company may have been involved with in the past. Being that this is a Halloween candy selling contest we ran with the Halloween theme and came up with the contest theme of Reveal Your Dark Side. This theme runs throughout our contest and we believe adds nice flavor and uniqueness to our contest.
Our contest goals were several-fold. One, we wanted to generate an immediate interest in both our company and our contest. Through use of a clever theme, and several visual aids including an excellent brochure and a Halloween themed video we feel that our contest was immediately attention grabbing. Secondly, we aspired to of course increase the Halloween candy sales of the Sweetr Candy Company by creating a contest that would drive the salesmen to work extra hard during the holiday season to achieve some of our excellent prizes, as well as personal pride. We plan to include weekly or bi-weekly updates that would be sent company-wide to let everyone on the sales force know how their progress was stacking up against that of their regional and national co-workers. This introduces the element of friendly competition from week to week and is another strong incentive outside of the prizes. Furthermore we wanted to not only foster company loyalty and an increase in personal job satisfaction, but also a sense of regional pride and accomplishment so that the contest was not solely each salesman for himself. To that end we included a regional prize, which would be a huge Halloween bash to celebrate the culmination of the season and would be awarded to the top selling region. All members of this region would be allowed to bring a guest. We think this would encourage within all regions a sense of teamwork and regional pride.
Not only did we aim to increase sales only during the months of the Halloween season, but throughout the entire year. To achieve this we planned on giving a $500 Visa gift card each quarter throughout the year, to motivate top sellers so they can earn credit towards next year’s Halloween sales contest. We think this would give employees a tangible benefit outside of pay, throughout the entire year and increase the likelihood that our company would again be hired to create a contest for the Candy Company.
Of course what good would a sales contest be without prizes, and we feel like the prizes we have to offer are incredibly exciting and desirable, all the while being a great motivator for increased sales both on the individual and regional levels. We have four different prizes which would reward efforts on varying levels. For our fourth place prize we felt it was important that those on the sales staff that were younger and maybe had a smaller client base still had an opportunity to win something. So for our fourth place prize, we are giving a 46” Sony Bravia LCD HDTV to the individual salesman who has the most dramatic percentage increase to sales. This puts everyone on a fairly even playing field and would reward extra effort to any given salesman without making them feel as though they have no chance of winning from the beginning. This television, if purchased from Wal-Mart would cost $898.00. Our third place prize would be for the top selling region and would be an all expenses paid party for everyone in the region and one of their guests. This party would be held on the patio of the beautiful hotel Chateau Avalon. The patio itself is a perfect place to hold a Halloween party under the stars and the hotel is something of a landmark as it boasts wonderfully themed rooms, further advancing our Halloween theme. To rent the patio for the night would cost $1500.00 and with the rental we are given five rooms for free. Running with that we decided to rent every couple a room for the night so that no one needed to worry about safe transportation after drinking at the party, and would provide even more fun and be sort of a mini-vacation for everyone on staff. Included in each room would be a Jacuzzi, chromatherty therapy tub, breakfast, king/queen bed, DVD player, and a DVD library. The additional cost of the rooms would be $1,935.00. We will be using Jane Ferris Interior Design to give our party an appropriate Halloween feel. The decorations would cost $600. For food we would use Jack Stack’s catering which would run us $18.45 per person which includes one person on site from Jack Stack’s to serve, and shapers (warmers) for the food, choice of 2 meats: beef, and turkey, with baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, plates, condiments, bread, pickles, sauce, cobbler, and soda which all together would run us $922.50. Finally for liquor we would use Bonterra Catering which for a five hour bar package would run us $620.00 and would include full Set-Up, clean-Up, professional bartenders, cocktails, domestic beer, house wine, sodas, mixers, garniture, and cocktail napkins.
For our second and first place prizes we would award a vacation for each in which the winner would be allowed to bring a guest. Both vacations are extremely exciting and well planned out. For the runner up salesman we would award a trip to Las Vegas which would include a two night stay, a Zumanity Show one night and a helicopter ride the next. We would also provide ground transportation to and from the airport to the hotel, with airport parking paid for. On top of all this we would give the salesman $700.00 in spending money to do with as he likes. This vacation as a whole would run us $1958.68.
And finally, for the top selling employee company wide, we would award them with an all inclusive trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica. This trip, on top of the all inclusive package, would include: transportation to and from the hotel, and to the airport in Montego Bay, airport parking, 100 minute spa package for each person scheduled for anytime during their stay, Bamboo River Rafting (take a stroll with a native in a bamboo canoe along the river), approximately three hours long, and a Dunns River Falls Tour approximately three hours long to see majestic rivers throughout the forests. Though it is an all inclusive package we would also provide them with $500.00 in spending money for their stay. Our grand prize vacation would, as a whole, cost us $3840.82.
Contests ‘R Us had to implement a contest plan for Sweetr Candy Company with a budget of $30,000. Overall Contests ‘R Us ended up spending $18,073, which includes the television, hotel patio, twenty-five hotel rooms, decorating, catering, liquor, the quarterly gift cards, the two trips, and the cost of printing brochures and posters. This resulted in a savings of $11,927, which Sweetr Candy Company could spend in other areas of their company.
