Develop and produce lesson plans and incorporate the above needs into the plans. Deliver and facilitate - Initial induction to the training facility and the course. Having a thorough understanding and knowledge of the subject/s to be delivered. Consideration should be made for the different learning styles utilizing the VAK / Vark system to ensure that all learning styles are catered for. The appropriate use of presentation methods such as powerpoint, flipcharts DVD’setc. Incorporation of group discussions and demonstrations. Promote interaction by moving learners around. Establish the results and reflect on the effectiveness of the sessions. Final assessments to establish whether goals of the tutor and the learner have been met. Evaluation - Establish where strengths and weaknesses are. From the assessment, identify any changes that may be required. End of course critiques and the use of written feedbacks from the learners during the course are a good method to evaluate the efficiency of the teaching. Evaluation will also assist with identifying needs for future courses and thus the cycle can be repeated. Role of a teacher The main role of a teacher is to facilitate communication and impart knowledge in a way that the learner is encouraged to enter into a wider debate surrounding the topic they have chosen. Other roles include; Ensuring that session aims and objectives are applicable to the learner and to teach the subject effectively. Assessing varying learning styles within a group and considering learners motivations and previous experience. Producing sessions that incorporate visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning styles to ensure learners have equal learning opportunities. Ensure a safe learning environment which will help to establish open and trusting relationships. Ensuring a duty of care for the learners and provide support throughout the course. Responsibilities of a teacher The main responsibility of a teacher is to continually reassess development and change during the course and create a seamless transition to ensure smooth delivery. Other responsibilities include; The monitoring and evaluation of the course and a subsequent attempt to improve the quality and effectiveness of the delivery by taking into account the learners changing needs. Course structure and delivery are responsibilities which require flexibility to reflect newly identified needs as seen in the teaching training cycle. Keeping up to date with the theory and practice of the subject being taught. Ensure risk assessments are carried out and control measures have been put in place. Excercise self control at all times. Making sure that all course materials such as handouts, lesson plans and presentations are current with no spelling mistakes. Boundaries of a teacher Boundaries are core to recognising our limitations and realizing when changes may be needed, being open to change and incorporating other peoples input involves recognising when boundaries must be revisited. Teaching should be carried out with no discrimination and thus treating every learner as equal. It is important to use appropriate language at all times when conducting sessions as this may affect the credibility of the tutor and portray an unprofessional image. Confidentiality of the learners must be maintained throughout the course should they approach you with a personal issue. and data protection should be maintained. ( duty of care ) The tutor should not force their opinions or beliefs on learners as this could easily offend the learners. Professional distancing must be maintained throughout the course as getting emotionally involved with learners could be detrimental to the learning / teaching process and may also be perceived by other learners as biased should they become aware. All teaching sessions should be carried out within the establishments policies and procedures and should only be altered after consultation and authorisation from the relative manager or governors. The tutor should always dress appropriately for the sessions as this will instill greater respect from the learner and portray a more professional image.
