Legislation and Codes of Practise. As a teacher it is important to know and understand there are legislation that must be adhered to in order to completely fulfil your role. Some of these legislations are generic and apply to all courses. These would include Health and safety at work HASAWA 1974 Equality Act 2010 Data Protection Act 2003 These outline a duty to act according to the law of the land and are past as an Act of parliament and can be enforced in a court of law Health and safety being very important in today’s environment and we must all be aware of dangers in the classroom. For example are there cables on the floor which someone may trip, or craft knives being placed where they cannot roll and fall and cause possible injury. It is very important to abide by the Data Protection Act 2003 to ensure the safe keeping of people in the class room. Identity theft is a major concern but other problems can occur if personal details are given out without the learners permission. Role and Responsibilities It is important to understand that the professional role between teacher and learner is maintained at all times. As a teacher your role is to impart your knowledge in such a way that the learner learns. Teachers must respect ethnic boundaries, ensure appropriate behaviour by teacher and learner is maintained at all times, make sure the classroom is a safe and comfortable learning environment. Is the content of the subject appropriate to the learners in the group, for example showing bias towards one point of religion such as Easter cards and not respecting other religious events in other cultures. Each lesson should be motivational, show flexibility to be able to adapt to different learning styles and where appropriate include some fun. It is essential to plan lessons in a logical progression in order for the learner to understand the subject and succeed. Points of Referral In order to be successful of the above points the teacher must know when it will be important to refer learners to appropriate professionals who can help with their specific needs. The primary role of the teacher is to teach all learners with in the classroom and not get too involved with the learners personal life. The main areas teachers should be mindful of would be reading, writing, numerical skills and IT these can be picked up by observation in many cases. If a learner lacks these skills it may be necessary to refer the learner to other professionals who can help improve the skills such as a basic skills course available through community learning. Maybe a learner would need extra classroom help while on the course. Other areas that can impact on the learners abilities could be personal circumstances such as debt, child care, transport to name a few and useful organisation that can help would be CAB, debt counselling or other appropriate community based project such as Families First Genysis, Want to Work and Flying start. These referrals should be dealt with sensitively and confidentially. Only in extreme cases such as child abuse concern or vulnerable adult issues should you break confidentially and report such cases to the necessary agencies and/or police. Classroom Contract Classroom contracts are essential to establish appropriate and acceptable behaviour within the classroom. This can be drawn by open discussion or ask each learner to write down their ground rules and then discuss openly and anonymously the rules to come to mutual consent for learners and teacher to follow. Example of the more common rules would be mobile phones silent , no talking over others, support between learners, no bad language. It Is then the role of the tutor to manage the classroom behaviour.
