In this assessment I will be reflecting on my role as a supervisor and I will be showing how relevant legislation come into practice in the care sector also I will be looking at the relationship with other team members and how I identify individual development needs and skills. Everyday care sector legislation comes into practice and I will describe the setting it is used in through my experiences at work:- Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, under Health and Safety at Work Act 1974; Whenever I have to place anyone into bed or remove them from bed I have to follow set guidelines and the risk assessment for that person before I start to lift anyone. The following is taken into account: - The environment, the height of the bed, the hoist, the amount of room to manoeuvre and the help available from another career. The object is to make sure that I can safely place the individual in the desired place without causing them injury or distress and myself any harm. “There is no such thing as a completely ‘safe’ manual handling operation. But working within the guidelines will cut the risk and reduce the need for a more detailed assessment.” Source HSE 1998 Human Rights Act 1998; In my work place there is a lady who’s religious belief are different from the other individuals in the care home and we all insure to up hold those beliefs for so as not to affect her human rights to make sure we follow her diet guidelines and her routine, so she feels respected and valued. We also respect the individual needs of the user, and for example one user doesn’t want to be cared for by male members of staff, so we make sure only female careers attend to her needs so as not to affect her human rights. Data Protection Act 1998; Each Individual in care with us has a care plan which is kept up to date and holds all important information from doctors details to phone numbers of family relations to the day to day routine and if any events have happened. It is my job to make sure it is lock away so that only the authorised people can look at this information which conforms to the data protection act 1998. “The Data Protection Act 1998 is a United Kingdom Act of Parliament which defines UK law on the processing of data on identifiable living people. It is the main piece of legislation that governs the protection of personal data in the UK. Although the Act itself does not mention privacy, it was enacted to bring UK law into line with the European Directive of 1995 which required Member States to protect people's fundamental rights and freedoms and in particular their right to privacy with respect to the processing of personal data.” Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Protection_Act_1998 The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 Accident or Injury may occur in an unsafe area in work, someone tripped over electrical flex or fall against a window or glass door or slip with fluids on the floor. It is my responsibility for making a report on any incidents that happen within the care home on my shift the following is an example of a time I had to fill out an emergency situation report. Mrs X had a wee accident in the hallway she was feeling embarrassed and turned quickly to go back to her room but fell on the slippery wet floor which hurt her leg and cut her arm. I applied pressure to the wound that was bleeding using dry sterile dressing, I then made Mrs X more comfortable and secure before I phoned for an ambulance while waiting for them to arrive I talked with Mrs X reassuring her everything will be ok. During this I had another career clean up the fluid on the floor and put up a hazard sign to make sure other residents and staff were safe. Once Mrs X was taken away I recorded the incident with the time, date, what happened on our accident at work form also making sure that other colleagues were aware of the accident. Relationships with team members is an important part of the job and in my role I show this through giving mutual support and co-operation while responsible to lead and to try to give the staff a sense of belonging, by talking clear and giving them a purpose. I also have the understanding of the team to recognise their conflicts and to resolve them using communication by Listening, speaking and observation skills to give recognition of individuals worth, race, culture and religion or background. Rayner suggests some strategies, which maintain a focus on teamwork, as well as the leader’s accountability for the team. It is knowing all the answers to maintaining a power relationship by controlling the situation through strength and weakness to build on strengths to motivate in achieving goals and to provide help and support teams courage, conviction confronting issues and to get feedback from others to share information in aid of achieving team success. In my team I had an individual that was having problems taking calls and I helped her to overcome talking on the phone by sitting down with her and planning out the communication needed in talking a call and by giving training to make sure employees are aware. By also suggesting training if needed and by showing new members in the job aspects, it can also be found that not everyone likes doing some aspects of the job that others might like to do so finding out what people prefer to do lets me explore the possibility for trading workloads so that staff can look forward to doing their jobs which improves their performance by collaborating in this way. The ethos of supervisors in promoting professional development and improving service of team members is to give more training to develop more understanding to team members for them to carry out their jobs under the legislations of Care Act 1990. To make them understand the law and the risks involved and to record on care plans any incidents and by helping to deliver good goals and promote welfare and to have responsibilities for their actions and to work within our guide lines and policy’s.
