Task 3 Part A
South Africa’s main experience with imperialism begins around the 17th century with both the Dutch then British rule. It was initially more tightly governed than North America. Colonists began to move into the area and them and their decedents claimed Africa as their permanent home. They became known as Afrikaners. During the 18th century many whites became known as Trek Boers or pastorial farmers. They interacted with the Khoikhoi and San groups of herders and hunters. The Khoikhoi were relatively easy to assimilate into European farm ways. Their attachment to the capitalist Dutch community brought dramatic, lasting cultural and economic changes. The Khoikhoi’s abandonment of their culture led to the ultimate loss of African control over the lands. Culturally, the Europeans turned to their Christian ancestors to claim privilege and advantage based on color. The Europeans attempted to colonize the indigenous people there. Fierce resistance to the Europeans presence took the shape of resurgent African Kingdoms. The Europeans won the land but not the people. Expanding the frontier of culturally mixed African and European pastoralists, a frontier that included slaves and impoverished lower class immigrants. The discovery of Gold and Diamond in the African mines brought a large amount of immigrants. In the beginning Africans worked their own claims but the imperialist system put an end to that. Africans lost their claims and eventually were only allowed to work as labors. Colonists began to encroach on their territories. Africans were eventually forced into smaller and smaller pieces of land. Through a series of laws passed in the 1870’s, African laborers were required to carry passes and live in all male compounds and sign contracts for work. In 1895 “Pass Laws” were extended beyond mining areas to all of South Africa. Any African caught without a pass could be detained and beaten.
Imperialism shaped and changed the destinies of individuals, societies, and entire continents.

Task 3 Part B
The Orange Revolution came about during the fourth presidential race in Ukraine. The government was declaring Viktor Yanukovych the winner prematurely. However, there was talk of massive voter fraud including intimidation, abuse and burning of votes. The state was reporting that there were no major violations in the election. The people of Ukraine were convinced that the election was being taken away from the real winner Viktor Yushchenko. The supporters of Yushchenko all wearing orange came to the Kiev square to demand Yushchenko be declared the winner. Yushchenko asked all his supporters not to leave the square until the ruling was overturned. After six days of peaceful protest, the government was forced to back down. The government declared the election invalid. A new vote was done and Viktor Yushchenko was declared the new President of Ukraine.
The Orange Revolution was a peaceful protest. However, if the election had not gone the people’s way, violence would have been eminent.
The Russian Revolution of 1917 made a difference in many peoples lives. It began in February when the Russian people wanted to do away with the tsarist regime. This was based on political, social and economic situation happening in Russia. Politically, the people of Russia resented the dictatorship of Tsar Nicholas II. Socially, they had oppresses the peasant class causing problems within the lower class. Economically, there was widespread famine and inflation around Russia. The revolution began when the people of Petrograd protested because of the food shortages. The people were also not happy with Russia’s involvement in WWI. The protests turned violent and there were riots against the police and soldiers. Eventually, the soldiers joined the protest and Tsar Nicholas II was abdicated. The October Revolution ended the protests and violence when the government was finally replaced. This became the first Communist government in the world.
With both of these revolutions they ended up getting what the wanted. However. Russia used violence from the beginning and in Ukraine it was peaceful but could have change at any moment.
Compare the tactics of one violent revolution and one nonviolent revolution.
Evaluate whether your chosen revolutions accomplished their goals.
