Review your role, responsibilities and boundaries of a teacher in terms of the teaching/training cycle Roles, responsibilities and boundaries are qualities which are assessed and reflected upon using the teacher/training cycle as defined by Ann Gravells as Identifying needs, Planning learning, Enabling learning, Assessing learning and Quality assurance and Evaluation. (Gravells, 2011) Identify Needs: Roles The learners may range from those who can barely read to those at Degree level each have different needs and work at different levels so I need to assess and evaluate and then develop which method of learning is required for each student. Across the whole lifelong learning sector most learners are adults, some returning to learning after a considerable time away. Research by (Malcolm Knowles, (1978) suggests that adults have particular characteristics. Teachers need to understand these and their needs and motivations. They also need to adapt and adjust content and style to suit the needs of groups and individuals. Responsibilities: By achieving the above, various teaching methods could be useful throughout the programme. “To understand learning, we must understand the nature of knowledge and vice versa” Kolb (1984), explains that different people naturally prefer a certain single learning style. Identifying Learning needs discussion and is essential then to Planning Learning. At times the learners may have been assessed by other people in my organisation and their needs may have identified through this process. It is the responsibilities of the teacher to monitor their own practice to endure the learners’ needs are met. Boundaries: Some learners may not wish to discuss/disclose their needs and a teacher must respect their right not to divulge sensitive information. Learners also expect that any personal information is kept confidential. Plan and Design: My main role as a tutor teaching key skills is to source or prepare appropriate resources for each session that will link to the required learning outcome of each student. Consideration must be made on when and where the sessions will be held and how to facilitate them, preparation of worksheets and other resources to make the session interesting and what to do when things go wrong. Boundaries: In the planning and design stages of the course I need to be aware of the learning outcomes and time restraints. I also need to take into consideration the cost of resources and any limitations on my budget. Deliver: One of the main responsibilities of a teacher is to gain the skills required for the subject in which you intend to teach. The responsibility is to encourage the learner to express their thoughts and have an opportunity to discuss any fears or doubts about their progress. A teacher should also beware of any special requirements a learner may require. The teacher has a responsibility to monitor, evaluate and improve the quality of the delivery taking into account learners changing needs. Boundaries: A teacher should look clean and presentable, communicate in an acceptable way and use appropriate language. Trust and mutual respect is important in the relationship. Boundaries are set so we can recognise the difference between approachable and open minded and not being overly familiar or demonstrate favouritism towards particular learners. Assess: Keeping accurate learning records for students is the responsibility of the teacher, this enables both teacher and student to monitor progress and evaluate the effectiveness of the programme they are undertaking. Boundaries: Teachers should set appropriate tasks that link to the learner’s objectives and levels. Evaluate: Role: To continue to review and evaluate. Responsibilities It is the responsibility of the teacher/tutor to continually review the effectiveness of the course including content and delivery methods. Learner satisfaction is also important and a lesson evaluation should be completed after each session. This would highlight any improvements that need to made or identify strengths of the sessions. Boundaries: Teachers should be aware of learner feedback but only make change if they are in accordance with course content and is for the benefit of the majority of learners. Teachers should also learn not to take evaluations personally.
