The role of a teacher is to first identify the needs of their learners. This should be done before any training is carried out. You can then be ready to deliver to all levels of ability and have the resources to do so, knowing whether there will be any boundaries you may need to overcome. Some learners may need extra support, knowing my own level of ability and where the boundaries are, is important as this may hinder learners if they do not get the right level of support. It is one of my responsibilities to look at the environment i will be teaching in, as this can have an impact on my teaching. If the environment is not suitable for the teaching this can have a negative outcome on my training and could hinder the learners. They need to feel comfortable in their environment and it must be suitable for their needs. There may also be procedures and protocols i have to follow and i should familiarise yourself with these before you start any training. It is a good idea to make sure that your environment is also in line with current legislation with regard to disabled users so they are able to access with ease, not all buildings are purpose built for teaching and you should bear this in mind if you have to booked somewhere yourself .
The learners will look to me to lead and as part of my role i have to set out clear rules and responsibility. From the beginning let them know what is acceptable, for example do you allow smoking' Or they may have to use equipment. There may be safety implication and it’s your responsibility to make sure the learners read and follow the rules (D Minton) “ Safety, remember …. Your principal responsibility is to ensure the health and safety of your students at all times. Institutions and workplaces have safety rules and regulations; you must know what they are and ensure that your students are aware of them.”
It is my responsibility as a trainer to be thoroughly plan and be prepared. Learning is a highly personal process. One theorist “David Kolb’s” explains that different people naturally prefer a certain single different learning style. Planned learning events must use a variety of techniques to put learning across in a manner, and at a pace and level, that suits individual learner and maximises individual learning, ensure you have ample handouts and activities to engage each and every learner, take notes from previous teaching of any learner’s needs that you have not encountered before, or any resources you use that did not meet the standards you require. When you plan you could start with an icebreaker this will help learners to relax and get to know each other and also give you time to learn a little bit about the different learning styles each learner has, enabling you to meet all the learners needs .It is important to keep in mind behaviour changes, many different characters will emerge during a training situation; tension and insecurity cause people to behave uncharacteristically. Keep an open mind, it is easy to jump to conclusions and hang labels on people. This can affect your behaviour towards them which can hinder learning. Make sure you have allowed time for an introduction into the course and to cover health and safety, breaks, smoking policy and any other relevant information they may need.
A trainer must choose learning methods that not only suit your own learning style and objectives, but take into consideration the learning style and objectives of all individuals participating in the learning. Our behaviour and style as a trainer will, to a great extent, influence the behaviour and participation of the learners. Offering encouragement and praise is essential as is adjusting pace and level, being flexible where necessary, but making sure you stick within the boundaries of your teaching practice
As part of your role you will need to assess the learners and you must give constructive and developmental feedback. Assessing your learners enables you to know where they are at and what they have gained from your training. It is also important to keep records and it’s your responsibility to ensure you have copies of
