Research Paper- Shane McNanie The family of elements that I have chosen from the periodic table is family 14. These elements are in the same family because they have similar electron configurations and the same valance electrons. They are where they are on the periodic table because of their ionic charges are the same and the elements on the table go in order according to their atomic weight. It is a component of rocks as carbonates of calcium (limestone), magnesium, and iron. Silicone is the generic description for an entirely synthetic polymer containing a repeating Si-O backbone. The organic groups attached to the silicon atom from silicon-carbon bonds define the class of silicone. The element germanium is a gray-white metalloid, and in its pure state is crystalline and brittle, retaining its form in air at room temperature. It is a very important synthetic semiconductor material. Tin is a metal and is found in ores, it is not synthetic. Lead is found in ores and is not synthetic. The economic importance of carbon is that it is used for diamonds in its hardest form and used for graphite in its softest form. Silicon is economically important because of its amazing uses in plastic surgery and in the medical field. Germanium is used in fluorescent lamps and transistors. Tin bonds well to iron, lead and steel and is used to prevent corrosion. Lead is important economically because it is still used in some pencils and is made with battery acid to make a car battery. Carbon forms many compounds that are very beneficial economically, it is in the clothes we wear, in the food we eat and in the fuel that fuels are cars. Silicone forms some beneficial compound to make surgery cosmetics to restore parts of the body. Lead forms with things to make the economically convenient pencil lead. The main element in my group that effects biology and the way of life is carbon. when united with oxygen it forms carbon dioxide, which is vital to plant growth. When combined with both oxygen and hydrogen it can form many groups of compounds including fatty acids, which are essential to life, and esters, which give flavor to many fruits. The isotope carbon-14 is commonly used in radioactive dating. Carbon is a vital element that keeps are world running. No plants, no oxygen. The role of these elements in the geology of our planet is to keep everything in balance with another. Carbon is by far the most important element out of this family because it generates plate life which then generates oxygen for the rest of the world. Without carbon we could not survive for more than a short period of time, it is vital to the geology of the planet. Activated charcoal is used in medicine (as powder or compounded in tablets or capsules) to adsorb toxins, poisons, or gases from the digestive system. Carbon is the only element I could find that was involved in medicine.
