AP English 6 Nov. 2011 “Research and Intellectual Development” “Most of the time students feel that doing homework and assignments is really useless.” (Frederick, Why Is the Research Paper Important In Scholarly Writing'). Contrary to what most students believe research papers are not assigned to torture them. The main purpose of research papers is to reinforce a lesson. Research papers also prepare students for a college lifestyle and ultimately establish researching habits for a student’s professional career. A secondary purpose of research papers is to force students to research about a topic and hopefully they stumble upon something that they would have never researched on their own accord. Being able to conduct research will be instrumental in any profession a person chooses to follow. The problem with this is that most students see research as a tedious task. These students miss out on the possible excitement they could uncover if they research wholeheartedly. Research papers are the best tool in a teacher’s toolbox. Teachers do not assign research papers to torture students. Actually, research papers are assigned to help reinforce whatever is being taught. Research papers get students to actually apply themselves. Even when a lazy student composes a research paper the student still has to research the topic to get a halfway decent grade. Though the student may not write the paper to his or her maximum potential they still come out of the assignment with a broader understanding of the topic. As researchers students seek out and find answers to their own questions about a topic. They experience the pleasure of learning new things and expand the students understanding of the topic. During this research is when a student has an opportunity to become an accomplished problem solver. (DiYanni, 567). Just the research itself is necessary to succeed in college and in any choice profession. Skills derived from preparing research papers are by no means just academic. Most reports and presentations required in business and other professions rely on research. Being able to write a research paper can help prepare a student for tasks in their professional career. There are very few professions that would not require a person to combine researched information with their original ideas. (Gibaldi,5). Even if a person wanted to become a sanitation worker, they would need to do research on when the tests are, testing requirements, and how to prepare for the test. The students who excel at research will always be more prepared than students who do not research. In job interviews the person who knows more about the specific field will typically get the job over the person with a better resume who knows significantly less about the company and field. Research will pay dividends in the job world. Especially in corporate jobs where proper research can catapult a person to a senior job. By researching and finding out a new system to work with a person could end up being promoted regardless of prior experience. Research increases one’s knowledge and understanding of a subject. Sometimes research will confirm a student’s ideas and other times it will challenge and modify them. It is said that the main purpose of doing research is not to summarize the work of others but, to assimilate and build upon the work of others and to use that to arrive at one’s own understanding of the topic. (Gibaldi,4). A student’s desire to find out more about their assigned topic can involve experimentation and taking surveys from respectable people in that field of study. Most of the time a search for a credible source will lead a student to the library. Once a student finds a credible source at a library, or more recently the internet, the student will want to know more than just what is necessary to complete the research paper and will acquire more knowledge on the topic. The student may even get off track and research something else because they stumbled across it and found it interesting. Now the less motivated student who did not do their own research may get a good grade but, they will not know the topic nearly as well as the dedicated student who did his own research. This could possibly lead to said student falling behind on the topic and missing out on some high quality knowledge. This is an example of why students believe teachers are trying to torture them because when they don’t do their own research they do the work with absolutely no intellectual gain. “Writing a research paper helps students to develop in them abilities to investigate, think, figuring out the truth, reaching to conclusions, evaluating results for accuracy and summarizing results.” (Frederick, Why Is the Research Paper Important In Scholarly Writing'). Research writing is really important for scholarly writing because it helps to divulge a student’s scholarly research potential. Most of the students possess strong intellectual and logical skills but unfortunately they are unaware of that. Research paper writing actually teaches students to discover important data and to manage it. Research paper serves as the foundation of the scholarly writing. It helps to crystallize your ideas. By writing a research paper one can easily organize their analysis and findings. While writing research paper the student introduces themselves to the new horizon of information. Students start to think and investigate aspects of the topic that they have missed out on therefore building a solid foundation of an impressive and comprehensive research paper. Research papers help solidify a student’s ideas. They require a complex understanding of the research topic which helps the writer grow intellectually. People want to make good decisions; decisions that are best for them. To make good decisions they need information. Research helps them find the information they need. The more people know about their choices, the easier it is to pick one. By doing research a person may find that they’re not heading in the right direction. Research will give them advance warning so that they can adjust their career decisions and still land on target. For instance, if they know the qualifications they will need before they start upgrading, the person will not be surprised later. Any person may encounter something they would have never thought about. Maybe they will need to go back and research their other choices before making a decision. Research is not only necessary in academic and professional life but, also in a person’s personal life. Research helps a person find details about their choices, and lets them explore those choices with little risk. It opens people up to new ways of learning and helps them bust out of a rut by making changes in themselves. Research presents more information for investigation which allows for improvements based on greater information and study.
