REPORT ON THE LEADRESHIP COURSE WE ATTENDED IN NAIROBI – KENYA FROM 6TH - 19TH DECEMBER 2009 We arrived on Saturday 5th December ant the camp officially opened on Sunday 6th December with over 30 participants from all over East Africa. Week I: 6th – 13th December 2009 In the first week, we learnt about conflict resolution and more importantly how to avoid conflicts as leaders. We also learnt about our cultures and the fact that we have different cultures should not bring division but unity instead because every culture is special. We learnt about the values every good leader should have and how to work with our values. We learnt about health and nutrition; we were given tips on how to eat healthy and remain strong. We then learnt about etiquette and grooming in which we were briefed about the value of the image we portray in public. We were taken through the Johari’s window where we evaluated our weaknesses and strengths. On Sunday, we went to the theatre and watched an interesting Kenyan play. Activities Various activities were carried out in the first week intended to build trust, teamwork and confidence among participants. For example, we were all blindfolded except our leader who was asked to lead us and this showed us the value of trusting and following a leader’s instructions. We were also divided into groups and asked to come up with skits based on leadership which encouraged teamwork and challenged us to be more creative. In the first week we had a cultural night; we prepared various traditional dishes from our country. We also clad ourselves in traditional outfits. This cultural night taught us to value our backgrounds and be proud of our culture. Field Trips In the first week, we visited the museum to learn more about culture like that of the Masai. We also visited the Kenyan Wildlife Service. We met its Director, Dr. Kipnyetich who was voted East African CEO and at this wildlife center, we learnt about the value of protecting our wildlife which is at the risk of extinction. From this Doctor, we learnt a valuable lesson that a leader is a dealer in hope and where everyone has lost hope; it is a leader’s duty to instill it in the people. We again visited the theatre where we watched a play about leadership and corruption. Week II 14th – 19th December 2009 In this week, we learnt about career development and how to choose a career that suits us. We also learnt how to make Curriculum Vitae and what to expect during job interviews. We learnt more about entrepreneurship and some of the most successful entrepreneurs in our society and the world at large. We learnt about citizenship and how to become a better citizen in our countries. On the last day of the course we learnt about project planning and management and this was important because from this, each participant acquired knowledge that will enable us start our own successful projects. We also discussed about forming an alumni to keep in touch with each other. Activities Some of the activities we carried out in Week II were throwing hoops to successfully enter a narrow pole and this taught us how to be focused as leaders, have determination and always be ready to take risks where necessary. We were also given a task to stand on a sheet of paper; we were over 18 people, and this proved to us that nothing is impossible. On the last day, we were given a task to pass through very small meshes, but our friends would help us go through them. This brought out the aspect of teamwork. Field Trips In the last week, we visited the Kick Start industry which is an NGO aimed at improving the lives of rural farmers in Kenya. We also visited the HACO industries and learnt about the processes of manufacturing goods, storage and finally the value of marketing. We were also taken hiking on a very big hill and from this difficult task we learnt the value of endurance as leaders. While hiking, we came into ‘contact’ with various wild animals such as giraffes, zebras, et cetera. This amazing day taught us as leaders to value and protect the wildlife in our countries. Conclusion We had a Graduation Ceremony on our last night. We were presented with certificates for having successfully completed the training. The weeks of the leadership course were amazing because they built our confidence, encouraged us to interact and turned us into amazing public speakers. We are grateful to the Administration and our parents for giving us a chance to participate in this training. We are also exceptionally thankful to Mr. Habib Ssenyonjo for al his time and commitment in this training. Compiled by Murhon Hilda Viola 6A 2010 On the behalf of: 1. Saidha Namirembe Abdula 6 SC 2.
