Remember the Titans In the movie “Remember the Titans” one of the first integrated schools come together and has all kinds of differences and problems. Despite these differences the football team comes together over camp and brings what they learned back to the real world. They show their town how to trust the heart and soul of a man rather than the look of him. Coach Boon is a great leader. He led his family when his mom and dad died. He had eight brothers and sisters and had to be there for his family. He also led his football team through courage, dependability, confidence, and stability. He knew what had to be done for the better of his team and each player. Self Understanding is being able to understand your own strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the movie the Titans were down at half time. The starting free safety was out because he gave up on his team and the second string free safety wasn’t fast enough to play with the school and have his team win. He realized that and knew he wasn’t a bad football player, but just didn’t have the god given athleticism to cover his opponents like his teammate did. He talked to the coach and gave his spot back to the starting safety to win the game. Understanding others is being able to understand the differences and similarities of his peers. In the beginning the Titans only knew each other as Black and White. The White players talked to the White players and the Black players talked to the Black players. To solve this problem the coach made every player learn about another player of a different race every day. To encourage this effort he went to 3 a day practices until they learned to come together. Oral communication is how the Titans communicated. They Talked to each other to bring themselves together as a team and win football games. The called Team meetings and talked on the field. They went out and had fun together and let each other know what was going on by word of mouth. Team Building is very important because it controls the effectiveness of the team. The Titans called a team meeting after they had already come together in camp to rebuild their team. They didn’t want their team to think everything was ok just because they were all friends now. They didn’t want each other to get comfortable just because they won a couple games. They let their team know that the struggle wasn’t over and that they needed to keep fighting for each other each and every day. They needed to depend on one another to get each other going. To develop satisfaction throughout the team, they had to get rid all the dissatisfaction. One of the white players would not accept that he had to play with black players. He refused to block for his running back because he was black. The team captain finally had to kick him off of the team so that the team could improve and be satisfied with one another. The Team captain, Gary Bertier, had great position influence among his team. He was able to get his team to listen when he needed them to. He was able to kick people off the team for the better of the team and influence his teammates to do what they needed to do. Like when his teammates called the team meeting he was able to tell them to listen, or when they were in practice, he realized that his teammate wasn’t blocking for the offense, Gary told him that he needed to block and he did. When Sunshine played his first game well in the movie, Coach Boon awarded him with the Game ball. This showed Reward influence. If every player gave their all every game because their goal was to win the game ball then there team would be great do to the award. Expert Influence was shown in the Movie Between the coaches. Coach Yoast was a Future Hall of Famer and was an expert in the game of football. Coach Boon let him run the defensive side of the ball and often worked with him to put players in the best position possible for them to win. Even though Yoast wasn’t the head coach, he still was able to influence his team and fellow coaches due to his expertise. In the beginning of the movie Gary Bertier showed Negative Identity influence. He was getting mad at Julius, his left side line backer, because he wasn’t giving his all. Julius though, told him he wasn’t doing his job as the captain. He never got on to one of his white friends for not blocking or not making a tackle, but yet he expected Julius to wear himself out for the “Team”. He didn’t have the best interest of the team in mind. Coach Boon uses tactical Management on his team. It’s his way or the high way, no ifs, ands’, or buts’. He made it very clear to his team when they went to camp that he was coach and that they were the players. It was His team. He even said the words, “This is a dictatorship, not a democracy.” He made sure that things got done the way he wanted them done.
