Henry was overshadowed by his elder brother Arthur, but when he died at an early age, Henry’s status and expectations were transformed. Thomas More suggested Henry’s education had a humanist cast, which perhaps influenced his decision to dissolve the monasteries. Henry, unlike his father, took a less peaceful approach to establish his reputation and a lesser role in the Government, until Wolsey gave him the option to rule how he wanted. However, the war with France and the excessive spending left the Crown in financial difficulties. Furthermore, with no male heir to the throne Henry was forced to consider other options; divorce and dissolution of the monasteries. The pope’s reluctance to grant annulment along with his wife’s nephew influencing the decision left Henry no other choice but to break with the Papacy and Rome. This caused unrest not only in England, but in Italy and France too, threatening England with future invasion. Henry died in 1547, after a long reign, and even though the dissolution of the monasteries had solved his financial difficulties, he still died in debt and in possession of over fifty monastic houses from the dissolution. The reign of Henry VIII was greatly significant as he introduced the idea of subjects accepting a belief which was defined by the state and not the pope, through moderate religious reform.
