When making any decision for a company there is many sides to look at. Who are the stake holders' Who are the decision makers' Who will be affected by the decision' Are the interests in the decision protected' There are so many questions. Finding a systematic way to break down business decisions and find the best possible outcome for everyone involved is a good way to start. In the Baird model it showed a decision making process based on a company’s code of ethics, virtues, values, morals and also job requirements.
In the simulation my role within the company as Quality Control Manager there were basic competencies that needed to be met. Some of which were managerial, career ambitions, providing accurate safety information, embody company values and also my own self knowledge and ethics. In the first simulation I needed to make responsible choices. My best possible answer was in this unfortunate event was to publish the information of the contaminated products on the companies website. The logic to this was that G Bio Sports would be making the most profitable income while minimizing waste. It would also give the consumer the liberty to know about the contamination. In the code of ethics at G Bio Sports it is to be honest and fair. In the second simulation my position was a realist and the best possible their answer was to honor the other countries rights and abide by their safety standards and to only sell the product where permitted. Part of my job competencies was fairness to the consumer and also embody the companies code of ethics. This answer to me was most fitting from where I stood within the company.
Virtues and values are a part of the company’s morals. The virtues and values were very cut and clear. Very much like the ones in my own company. Human dignity and respect was a value. In my job everyday I must follow this value very strict. Working in the airline business as a flight attendant if this wasn’t one of our values there would be physical fight everyday Working in small space doesn’t help. We pride ourselves on the dignity and respect we give to fellow co-workers but also to the passengers. Working in small spaces it is frustrating to maintain this value. G Bio Sports was based on four core virtues, integrity, contributory justice, retributive justice, and moral courage. All of which are virtues that I hold in my company that I work for. Another value G Bio Sports had is self management. This value is directly toward me in my job. There is no reporting to a supervisor everyday, I manage myself on a daily basis. I have to make the best possible choices that will meet my jobs requirements. Another value is accountability like with any company accountability is everything.
To make up the value, virtues, and overall morals of the company there must be business ethics. In the simulation, in my workplace, or personally outside social pressures are a big influence. In the second simulation many of the decisions from the Baird model could have different outcomes depending on how outside social pressures. The question was; since the FDA made the safety standards higher in the U.S should the company sell the product overseas to foreign markets with lower safety standards' From this question outside social pressures could render this action to be unethical and that a U.S company should follow United States standards. Going deeper into the Baird model there was another ethical decision to be made. Would the best choice to be to send the product to countries where people are not governed and where the company would not suffer any legal action. Outside pressures may examine this to be against human rights. Many people could judge these huge decisions made by the company to be unjust. Social pressures will always exist. The best possible outcome is following the company’s code of ethics, virtues, values, and morals. Following the Baird model my not minimize external pressures and maximize company benefits.
With both the simulations there was more than one choice depending on how you approach the situation at hand. The Baird model gave a good clear path to create a systematic way to make a conscious choice. This included job competencies, values, virtues, and morals. Together with the Baird model and self knowledge coming to a conclusion in a situation in business decisions can be made easier.
