Red vs. Blue Color Perceptions Have you ever wondered what color to wear' Which color is more appealing to the eye' Which one people prefer' What about blue and red' Both are primary colors, but have you ever noticed the calm mood of blue oppose to the bold mood of red' Blue with its calming effects, tends to be favored by more people than red. The question is why' This essay compares the different aspects of red and blue as a color, in art and fashion, and in various cultures. Red is the color of blood, fire, and wine. Seeing red alludes strong emotions. It evokes love, anger, passion, violence, and intrigue. It is a hot, strong color that can cause a range of conflicting emotions. Red is both Cupid and the Devil. It has dual color symbolism. On one hand red is energizing and aggressive. In direct contrast it is used for “stop” signs around the world today. In addition, red is such a strong color that studies show it can also create a physical effect. Seeing red can increase blood pressure and the rate of respiration. It can also be associated with your cheeks turning red from anger. It is a very powerful color. While red tends to be a dramatic color, blue tends to be a calming color with both stable and soothing aspects. It can either be strong and steadfast, or light and friendly. Blue has multiple meanings. People normally associate blue with freedom, strength, new beginnings, loyalty, power, protection, optimism, and better opportunities. These associations are what make blue such a popular color. Over 50 percent of people claim blue as their favorite color. A light blue is cool, relaxing, and peaceful. A midnight blue can have a sedative effect. Clear blue is uplifting, while a dark or navy blue may be depressing and restrictive. Blue is another example of dual color symbolism. Aside from the associations of blue skies and cool water with their positive meanings, blue can also mean sadness or depression. This is why we sometimes say “feeling blue” or “getting the blues.” Just like red, blue can cause physical effects, by making time pass more quickly and helping you sleep. Compared to red, blue is not only appealing, but also healthful because it reduces blood pressure, calms the autonomic nervous system, and is anti-inflammatory. It’s an all around color. In the fashion world, men find women sexier if they are wearing red rather than a blue. Red clothing has flames of passion and attraction. “However, red won’t make you look smarter or more competent,” says study author Andrew Elliot, Ph.D. Men don’t rate women wearing red, as more intelligent, likeable, or better personality. Still red is dramatic, predominant, glamorous, powerful, and is beloved by fashion designers. Red grabs attention and is good to use when you don’t want to sink into the background. It can be speed, confidence, a dash of danger, mysterious, friendly, and sometimes sophisticated. A little bit of red can go a long way. This is why red is also a bold color to use in the art world. Red pops out and can create a strong, dramatic piece. The art world is ablaze with the fiery appeal of red. After all, red is the “new black.” It is making a bold appearance from a variety of artists and art. You have to be careful with how you use red. While it may be attractive, using a lot can be too much and less appealing. Blue is a more comfortable color to wear. It is a favorite color for women and especially men of all ages. Blue denim is the most common material in the Western world. In fashion blue is usually associated with intelligence, stability, and even authority figures. Wearing light blue can be either analytical or practical, while dark blue is intelligent, self-reliant, and shows responsibility. Deep royal blue and navy blue are warmer than lighter blues. They show richness and superiority. If you combine a light and dark blue, you show trust and truthfulness. Many of these characteristics also apply to art. Blue art is calm and refreshing, and normally depicts rivers, waterfalls, skies, and oceans. It creates smooth flowing patterns and curved images. In the art and fashion world, blue attracts many people. Red is known as power. Many businessmen have the red power tie because of this. That’s also why there is the red carpet for people such as celebrities and VIPs. In some places red denotes purity, joy, and celebration. In China, red is the color of prosperity, happiness, and good luck. In addition, many countries use red on their national flags. Red is even used on your 40th anniversary, because the traditional gift to get your spouse is a red ruby. When that special wedding day comes, brides in the east traditionally wear red. In some places, red may also have some negativity. In South Africa it is the color of mourning. Universall, red lights signal danger or emergency. Stop signs and stop lights use red to grab your attention and alert danger. Red has a variety of meaning in all cultures. In many diverse cultures, blue is related to religious beliefs, it brings peace, and it’s believed to keep the bad spirits away. Blue is importance and confidence, not somber or sinister. This is why there are blue power suits for the corporate world. It’s why police officers have blue uniforms. In addition, blue can represent love. It is the western tradition for a bride to wear something blue. Even though blue is more popular in the western world, it is also used in other cultures. For example, in Iran, blue is the color of mourning. In almost every culture blue has a positive meaning because it is associated with blue skies, blue water, and the “blue planet.” Blue even went back to the Greek and Roman days. It used to represent the sky gods Jupiter, Juno, and Mercury. Today in Judaism, blue symbolizes God the Father. In the Catholic Church blue symbolizes the Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven. In Islam, blue is the color of religion, it symbolizes community, and it decorates many mosques. Like red, blue is used in numerous national flags and symbols around the world. It is a universal color. Blue, compared to red, has more interesting aspects as a color, in fashion and art, and in several cultures. As a color, blue is more relaxed while red is somewhat hectic. In fashion and art, red may be more attractive and dramatic, but blue shows off better qualities. Blue says more which makes it preferred by more people. In cultures, the significances of blue and red may vary, but blue has a more positive meaning universally. Color preference may depend on the person and color choice can vary. When you compare the facts and look at the statistics, blue overall has more relaxed and safer qualities. With red, you have to be willing to take the risk and go for a bolder effect. With blue, people feel more comfortable and can relate to it better. In the end, blue has the greater appeal.
