Recruitment Strategy - Star Industries
Maintenance Supervisor
Star Industries is implementing the following recruitment strategy for the hiring of a Maintenance Supervisor for the vacant position in our NSW branch. This position has been made vacant following the departure of John Thompson from the position.
The position is currently being filled by the Plant Manager, Grant Denver, until a suitable person is employed into the role. As Grant overseas the entire operations within the NSW Branch, it is essential that the position is filled quickly as to ensure the smooth operation of the NSW branch.
Star Industries is a manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer of quality windows and doors for residential and commercial premises. With the company's expansion, strong growth and a focus on high quality design and manufacture it is essential that the "best available" and "highest quality" candidates are considered and employed.
This therefore means that a number of considerations need to be made concerning where to recruit from, externally or internally, and the adequate training to be provided to ensure the company continues its high level of quality and workmanship.
This strategy will outline;

* Remuneration Package
* Budget
* And Possible Strategies including specialist staff required and the documentation of the process.
Job Description
The HR department has devised a job description with consultation from Grant Denver (Plant Manager NSW) as to the particular responsibilities and requirements that a candidate must possess to be able to fill the role successfully.
Responsibilities
* Supervision, planning and implementation of all maintenance activity in order to optimize production
* Supervision of maintenance staff and plan scheduling and routines
* Ensure security of production and that they fall in line with company policy and procedures and comply with safety, legislative and environmental requirements
* Ensure all maintenance programs are within safety and budgetary constraints
* Carry out toolbox meetings and safe job analysis as required
* Regularly review and monitor compliance with safe work systems and maintenance procedures
* Preparation and submission of budgets for the maintenance operations
Requirements
* Possess at least 5 years experience in maintenance works
* Knowledge of the manufacturing industry
* Ability to communicate with technical specialists
* Knowledge of maintenance methods and equipment
* Possess a high degree of numeracy and literacy skills
* Lead a team both as a supervisor and in a technical capacity
* Must be computer literate
* Be able to write and submit reports
* Relevant technical qualification
* Experience ordering parts/supplies and maintaining an inventory
* Advanced technical training and certifications
Advertising
Star Industries is fortunate that it maintains a high level of training for all maintenance staff and therefore can draw upon its current workforce to be considered for promotion to the supervisors position.
Advertising for this position will therefore be through a number of sources internally including;
* Internal Bulletin Boards
* Management Recommendations
* Staff Intranet
This will cater for the already qualified people within the company to present their application.
The company cannot rely solely on internal applications, especially if the search is unsuccessful, therefore Star Industries will advertise externally on SEEK.com.au, and through industry magazines.
If a search is solely done internally and the search is unsuccessful, the company will lose valuable time and money in the search for a new supervisor, therefore the position must be advertised both internally and externally to find the best candidate.
The HR Department will create the advertisement with consultation from the Plant Manager (Grant Denver), to ensure the job description and requirements are correct for the position. HR is the most appropriate department to co-ordinate the advertising of the position to ensure that the advertisement is within company policy and legal requirements including;
* Racial Discrimination Act
* Sexual Discrimination Act
* Disability Act
* EEO for Women
* Human Rights Act
* And Age Discrimination Act
It is essential that the advertisement does not include any preference for age, race, gender and does not discriminate against any person or group, allowing for all persons to apply regardless of any of the above.
Star Industries will accept all applications and will make their selection decisions dependant on "the most qualified person for the job".
Outsourcing is an option that the company has available to it, and has been used previously for filling positions within the company.
However the Hr Department doesn't believe that outsourcing will be required as ideally the candidate would be best attained from within the company.
Internal recruitment would be the best outcome for Star Industries as it promotes long term career growth for employees, and the company benefits from the investment of a long-term employee all the while promoting career advancement from within the company.
Selection
The selection process for this position will be done internally within the HR Department, as advertising will be done through internal sources and through external job advertisements.
It is believed that the HR Department can handle the number of applications that will be received and processed.
Therefore as the position will only require applicants with a high level of experience, HR will also handle the sorting of applicants through the first stage. If any issues arise through this stage, then the Plant Manager will be called upon to assess any applicants that HR is unsure about.
From this stage a number of applicants will be asked to attend a panel meeting, headed up by the HR Manager and
