RELATED TEXT ESSAY: Rabbit Proof Fence Journeys allow individuals at any age to make certain decisions that can lead them to a better life. Obstacles occur throughout a journey, and can be overcome by the individuals intellectual mind or by assistance. The film Rabbit Proof Fence directed by Phillip Noyce depicts a leader undertaking a physical, emotional, and spiritual journey along with two others. They were returning to their families as they were dragged away from them. Rabbit proof fence allows one to understand the vast connection between the Aboriginal people, the land, families and their courage. Through this portraying one very strong journey. Hardly any food, water or barely any proper shoes whilst walking on rocks, through water and the harshest parts of mother nature can portray ones physical strength . The aspect of a physical journey is portrayed through Rabbit Proof Fence. Molly, Daisy and Gracie three young aboriginal children were torn away from their families by the white people. They were about to undertake obstacles relating to the physical environment and escaping from the white people so they could return to their home. In scene 8 the long shots and the mid angle shots demonstrate the harsh land and the colours portray a dry vast long desert, with the children battling against the heat and trying to find water or food in any possible way. The colours and props used within the movie represent a vast and long journey for three young aboriginal kids. It is portrayed through the red, orange and yellow warm colours. Aboriginal lady states “You girls from Moore river… that’s a long walk 800 miles plus, you must be tired here I’ll give you some food, water and shoes…” This quote depicts the ruggedness of the natural environment and how the children travelled by foot for a long distance. It also portrays empathy towards the aboriginal people as the aboriginal lady was too afraid to run away when she was captured. She was afraid of the long physical journey which could possibly lead to death of one is not strong enough. Forced to be separated from your own family for your whole life and cast away all of your beliefs, traditions and language, can cause one to feel depressed and isolated from their customs. Rabbit proof fence depicts an emotional journey through the Aboriginal children being brought up in the white tradition, leaving all the precious memories and customs behind. In scene 2 it portrays the Aboriginal people saying a Christian prayer, not even knowing what it means. Therefore this demonstrates the white people taking away the Aboriginal beliefs and rituals and replacing them with their own customs and rituals. The nun also states “This is your new home here, we don’t speak that jabber, you speak English..” From this it depicts that there was the loss of the Aboriginal language and they were trying to replace it with the English language. This can result in an emotional journey as something that someone was born with, they would have to change it because they were forced to. In scene 1 and 2 it portrays mid and long shots of the Aboriginal children being taken away from their families. This was the beginning of their emotional journey as it was the start of their life without anyone to help and support them. The land, animals and the natural environment are a strong spiritual connection between the Aboriginal people and them. The spiritual connection between the Aboriginal children in Rabbit proof fence and the natural features help and motivate the children to come back home. In scene 1 it portrays long shots of the eagle and the connection between it and the Aboriginal people. This movie portrays a spiritual journey as the physical features they use help them out smarten the whites and come back home. The motif of the eagle gave strength and courage towards the three aboriginal children, this is evident through scene 9, the last scene. This is where they are tired, exhausted and fall to the ground, once the eagle appears they regain their courage and motivation to go home. Molly, the eldest child states “It’s going to rain it will help us run away, it will cover our tracks.” This quote demonstrates the spiritual connection between the aboriginal people and the rain. It depicts the aboriginal children using the rain to help them, not working against it. Also in scene 3 it portrays the three aboriginal children walking in the creek, therefore the tracker won’t be able to track their path they left behind as the water doesn’t leave tracks. Therefore this is a spiritual connection and journey with the land as it helps them return home to their parents. In conclusion the journeys of the three young Aboriginal people ended in a good result, but it was also the start of a new journey for them as well. Through their courage, strength, connection to the physical features and their emotional feelings, it conquered the harshness of the obstacles and resulted in two of the three returning home. The idea of journeys in this film was challenged by the actions and thoughts of each individual.
