Introduction:
Today man’s scientific knowledge is very wide and highly advanced. It has helped him to discover and invent many things for his ease, comfort and efficiency. Computer is the latest and most brilliant child of science.
Functions:
A computer is a programmable machine designed to sequentially and automatically carry out a sequence of arithmetic or logical operations. The particular sequence of operations can be changed readily, allowing the computer to solve more than one kind of problem.
A computer system consists of hardware and software. Computer software is a collection of computer programs and related data that provide the instructions for telling a computer what to do and how to do it. In other words, software is a conceptual entity which is a set of computer programs, procedures, and associated documentation concerned with the operation of data processing system. Computer hardware is the equipment, which makes up the computer system. All general-purpose computers require the following hardware components:
Mass storage device: Allows a computer to permanently retain large amounts of data. Common mass storage devices include disk drives and tape drives.
Input device: Usually a keyboard and mouse, the input device is the way through which data and instructions enter a computer.
Output device: Monitor, Printer, Loudspeaker, graph plotter or other device that lets you see what the computer has accomplished.
Central processing unit (CPU): The heart of the computer, this is the component that actually executes instruction
Origin of Computer:
The first use of the word "computer" was recorded in 1613, referring to a person who carried out calculations, or computations, and the word continued with the same meaning until the middle of the 20th century. From the end of the 19th century onwards, the word began to take on its more familiar meaning, describing a machine that carries out computations. Charles Babbage developed the first analytical engine in 1812. This machine had the concepts of modern computers namely memory, arithmetic unit and capacity to handle stored program. But this machine could not be put into practical applications due to technological limitations tat that time. In 1854, George Boole, invented the logic system which is the basis for today’s digital computers. In 1937, the first electro-machine calculator was developed by Howard and Aitten. In 1946, the first computer came into existence. It was named ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator). It was developed by Dr. John Nouchly and J.P. Eckert of the University of Pennsylvania, USA. In 1951, Remington Rand Corporation of USA brought out a commercial computer named UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer). These computers had the shortcoming of value technology. They were slow in operations and unreliable. These computers were named the first generation equipment. Transistor Technology gave advent of second generation of computers. These were smaller in size, but more reliable and had higher speed of operation. The fourth generation computer, presently manufactured by USA, Japan and other European and Asian countries are based on large scale integration. Better computers are under trial in USA and Japan. These are based on artificial intelligence. They will think as the human brain, collect most information from their reservoir of memory, and make expert judgment and decisions.
Use of Computers:
There once was a time when the only computers known to the average person were those the military possessed. Eventually, large corporations found many different uses for computers in the business world, and today, computers are as common in numerous households around the globe. People from all age groups are learning to operate computers and anyone who has worked with computers for long periods of time knows that computers can be just as addicting as smoking. Because of its extremely high seed, a computer can carry out calculation in just a few minutes that would require months perhaps even years if carried by hand. This very high speed is accompanied by an equally high level of reliability. Thus a computer practically never makes a mistake of its own accord. Computers are devices which process information very fast. These machines can be programmed and can be made to perform repetitive type of calculations consistently, accurately and speedily. Many of the routine activities in today’s society are being performed by computers. For example, when we go on holiday our seats are often reserved with a computer. The traffic in the some major cities is, to a large degree controlled by computer. Many of the bills we pay are calculated and printed by a computer. Hence computer has marked a new era in the history of development of man’s life.
Disadvantages:
The disadvantage of owning a computer is the information that people can access from the Internet. Many teenagers have gained access to information on drugs, pornography, use of weapons and making bombs although the restrictions are applied. The Internet has also made the youth of today quite lazy, especially in terms of their education. If a student needs to research information for school, they merely access a relevant site and download the information, rarely paying attention to what is written. This information is often open.
Conclusions:
There is no doubt that the computer as a technological tool is here to stay. The sooner children become computer-literate, the better for many aspects of their future lives. We all need is to look ahead and to mark the changes coming in the world on account of computer and profit from it.
