• Resources: Ch. 4 of Keys to College Studying, 8 Secrets to a Knockout Business Presentation
• Due Date: Day 4 [Individual] forum
• Use the reading 8 Secrets to a Knockout Business Presentation to carefully time yourself as you read the article. When finished, calculate your words-per-minute reading rate using the instructions from p. 140 of the text.
• Summarize main points from the reading into a short, bulleted list. Then provide your answers to the following questions in a 200-to 300-word response:
o What was your approach to reading the selection'
o What was your reading setting'
o How did you minimize distractions'
o Did you become emotionally involved'
o Which of the four reading purposes did you employ' You can list more than one.
o List new vocabulary terms, and provide their definitions
Response:
1. Words-per-minute: 580 words/3 minutes=193 words per minute
2. Key Points
• Find a relevant fact beyond your topic norm using educational websites for new research, interview industry mavericks, or the business press
• Avoid too much information on the PowerPoint slides to avoid information overload
• Practice delivery to avoid uncomfortable pauses or nervousness
• Do not overload the presentation with too many jokes
• Choose memorable props to captivate the audience
• Make the audience the main character in a script that faces a problem that the presenter helps them solve
• Use terminology that the audience my understand
• Use slides that emphasize key points in the presentation
3. What was your approach to reading the selection'
When I read the article I had an open mind and a positive approach. I knew the content was something I was familiar because I have previously done presentations. I felt positive that not only could I understand the article but actually retain some good tips from it.
4. What was your reading setting'
The article was brief so I was able to read during some down time that I had. The article took approximately 3 minutes to read. I was at home when I read the article during mid-day. There were no distractions because I turned the television and the ringer on the telephone off.
5. How did you minimize distractions'
Because the article was brief, distractions were not a concern. When I read, I normally mute the television and turn the ringer off on the telephone to have silence.
6. Did you become emotionally involved'
Although, I believe the article was not written with the intent to be filled with emotions I was able to relate to the article. I was able to retain information that could be used in the future.
7. Which of the four reading purposes did you employ' You can list more than one.
The purposes I used were reading for understanding and reading for practical application. I read the article to understand for my assignments but also for practical application for when I next give a presentation.
8. List new vocabulary terms, and provide their definitions
I was familiar with the terminology used in the article therefore, there are no new vocabulary terms.
