There are many races with different society throughout the world. Due to the world second highest population, India contains a complicated society and mainly of Indians whom race is Hindu. Races and society in India is hard to be explained in just words, however, a director name Danny Boyle successfully revealed the race and society in India by creating a movie name “Slumdog millionaire” which won him 8 awards in Oscar. This movie is mainly about Jamal Malik, an 18 year old orphan who is about to win 20million rupees on a movie show name “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'” When he’s reaching to win the amount of money, he was accused cheating because the authority had evidence on him that he did not have any formal education before and had been a career-thief as a youngster (rAjOo, 2008).How can he know so much about the questions' He was tortured by the police who was trying to know how he knows the answers. To prove his innocence, Jamal tells the adventure of him as a slum with his brother, Salim went through when they were kids(Pictures,2008).During the adventure, he also encounters local gangs and the girl he love, Latika. Every chapter of his adventure revealed how he knows those answers to the question in the game. Other than that, this movie actually revealed the truth that what issue Muslims in Bombay, India have faced. To begin with, issue that is face by Muslims in Bombay, India is poverty. Poverty, such as child labor happens. International Labor Organization claims that government in India estimated 12million of employment children under age 14.On the other hand, activists in India estimated that the true figure of child labor is 5times greater than the figure estimated by the government (Clifford, 2009). Meanwhile, in the movie, we can see that there are local gangs who try to persuade children by giving them beverages and places to live. There is a scene in a movie that the local gangs ask the children to sing and said that they would train them until they become singers, famous and then rich. But at the end of the day, the children became one of the tools for them to make money. For example, they make the children begging for money on street. In order for those children to earn more money, the children were mutilated by the local gangs so that people will pity them and give them more money. Besides, the movie also showed that after Jamal and his brother, Salim successfully escaped from the local gangs, they lied to tourists that they’re the tour guide so that they can earn money for living expenses at Taj Mahal. They even steal tourist’s shoes and car’s tires to earn extra when the tourists are busy visiting and taking photo of the palace. Other than this, there is also scene of Jamal and Salim working inside a restaurant which is also consider as child labor. Secondly, India is lack of providing materials for daily needs. As we know about India, the country has second largest population is the world and is also well known as one of the poorest countries in the world. Due to poor citizens in India, they often wear shabby clothing. Research found that even patients in India can be seen wearing shabby clothes provided by their family which make medical treatment becomes difficult (Bhattacharya, 2008).In the movie scene after Jamal’s mother was killed, after he and Salim successfully ran away, they were able to find a place to sleep overnight. However, under the rain, we can see that they’re shivering because they’re cold. Another example that is shown in the movie is that when they wake up in the morning, local gangs found them sleeping in a rubbish dump site. If people in India do have enough providing materials, then Jamal and Salim will be sleeping inside a house instead of a camp by rubbish dump site. Furthermore, another issue that is face by Muslims is the crime rate in India. Although crime rate in India had been decreasing for 40% in past 20years, (B, 2008), it is still considered as one of the country which have the highest crime rate throughout the world. This issue happens because the police in the country are irresponsible. According to Koshy (2009), survey shown that people in India have little faith to police because they’re lazy. It took them average of 3-4 years just to solve a crime case. Moreover, in the survey, he mentions that some of the police in India asked the locals for bribe before they register for their first information report. This report show us that majority police in India is lazy and unfair. The movie clearly shown that even when the police saw the Indians are killing the Muslims, they are still sitting there playing cards and relaxing. This shows that they are very lazy to solve the crimes in India. This can be known as one of the main cause why India is still in the list on becoming of the highest crime rate in the world. Besides, the police are powerless against them. We can see that their still caring batons on their waist but not pistols. If they try to get themselves involve to stop those Indians from killing those Muslims, they might get themselves hurt or even maybe murdered. Also, compare to the Indians, the police is too few. Evan if the police is highly experienced, try imagining a car crashing into a lorry, it will be like suicide for them. Other than that, government politics in India is weak. The government in India doesn’t have the power to control the country due to overpopulation and lack of support. The one who have the power to control is the rich people in India. They are the one who make the locals support them because they are rich. The government is powerless against them. Rich people in India control the market which also makes them having the power to control almost everything. They can buy anything using money, even power. For example, Javed, a rich man in India, hired Salim as one of his right hand man to execute anyone who tries to stand in his way to become more powerful. Because Javed is very rich, Salim don’t have the choice to stop working or betray him. This is because Javed pay Salim a large amount of money when he orders Salim to kill without giving him any reasons. Other than this, Salim understand that if he betrays Javed, he would get himself killed by other Javed’s hired gunners. People in India are actually afraid of people like Javed because they would get themselves of their family members killed if they do something wrong or stand in his way. Compare to the government, rich people in India have more power. Such as Javed, with power, he force Latika to married him. We can know that Latika who won’t love a guy like him didn’t have her decision. When she tries to run away from Javed, she was caught by Javed’s underlings back to the house. As a result of running away, she gets herself injured by Javed with a knife which gives her a scar on her face. Societal issue such as racism also appears in India. The actor’s wife in this movie, Javed’s wife, Shabana said that they are facing difficulties finding a house in Mumbai, India just because they are Muslims (sheddy73, 2008). The Indians there have hated Muslims and continuing to kill them since long time ago. We often saw or heard news about Indians is killing Muslims again and again in India. One of the news says that 60 Muslims is killed and burned alive while houses and cars were being torched by the Hindus rioters in India (Iqbal, 2009). From the movie, we saw the Indians chasing Muslims with knife and woods trying to kill them without any reason. Jamal’s mother is one of the victims who had been killed during the incident. When the Muslims are killed, many of the children actually become orphans. In the movie, Jamal, Salim, Latika and some other children were the victim who became orphan. When the police saw the Indians kill the Muslims, they just ignore the case and continue playing their cards. This proved that police in India is unfair and even racism to Muslims. People in India are lack of quality education. Primary and secondary schools should reforms while entry for foreign universities seeking to establish campuses in India should be easier (Reuters, 2009). Due to lack of quality education, citizens of India usually are more close minded and often look down on someone who has no formal education before. For example, in the movie, the authority accuse Jamal cheat in the game show just because they have evidence on he didn’t have any formal education before. Although Jamal have many life experiences, they still look down on him. Another example given in the movie is that the police actually tortured Jamal to find out how he knows the answers before asking how he knew the answers. Next, if the police are well educated, they should at least know that human have rights and it’s wrong to torture a person before giving him the chance to prove his innocence. Even after a person is proved wrong, that person should be judge in court and laws but no being totured by police. Peoples in India have not been provided with quality education, any people who have formal education would surely be more understanding and open minded to accuse anyone without solid prove of a person is cheating or lying. To sum up, issue that is face by Muslims in Bombay, India is poverty which include of child labor and lack of providing materials. Another issue that is face is the crime rate in India. Police should be fair, responsible and be more professional on caring their duty. They should help the people in India so that India can actually become a more developed country. Government in India should also try their best to control India even tough it has the second highest population in the country. Schools should be improved. Besides, citizens in India should be more supportive and do things that are more beneficial to the country. Rich people should help the poor one and not trying to control the country. Quality education should be provided. With more quality of education, people in India will be more civilized. Number of racism in the country can be reduced. Furthermore, with formal education, people in India will think carefully before things they made. Such as, crime rate will be lowered. Racism in India will also be lesser. Lastly, in my opinion, by having better education and supports from the citizens to government, India can be a better developed and civilized country, issue that is face by Muslims in Bombay, India will also be solved.
