The world is changing and the way people living, working and studying are better and more convenient. The development of technology plays an important role in these changes. Computer is one useful tool has been used popular on the world. We can see computers help people very much in many fields of life, computer are influential in our lives. In education, computers were used to change the traditional education form and the government of many countries had many policies to bring computes to elementary school children. Whether to use computer at elementary school has long been a controversial issue. I am personality inclined to agree with the use of computer at elementary school for a number of benefits this policies offers. One of the most obvious benefits of computer policies for elementary school children is that they bring to children a better learning environment. When computers were used in class room, children will have more information of lesson from computers, they can read, listen and learn on computer. Computers enable children to learn more creating, by using computer, they can research topic the teacher talks on the classroom and have more activities to improve their knowledge. All the resources on the computer will help children learn quickly as well. A research has showed that “In some innovative projects, computers are more than tools for bringing efficiency to traditional approaches. Instead, they open new and unforeseen avenues for learning. They allow children to interact with vast amounts of information from within their classrooms and homes. They tie children from across the world together” (Riel 1994).Children also have more condition to drill and practice when using computers. “In mathematics specifically, the computer can provide practice on arithmetic processes and foster deeper conceptual thinking. Drill-and-practice software can help young children develop competence in counting and sorting “(Clements and Nastasi, 1993). Furthermore, children who use computer at school will build their computer skills, which are very necessary in modern technology society. In the future, computer will become a popular tool at high schools and universities. By building the computer skill for elementary school children can have basic ability to work with computers through middle school, high school and perhaps beyond. Children can have many activities with computer such as typing one world, copying it in to documents, young children can learn how to use basic skill of computer. In addition, using computer can help children learn more social skill. Working with computer at school, children can work with partners instead of working alone, it promotes the development of children teamwork skill and social skill. Opponents of using computer at elementary schools argue that there are many negative impacts for children when they use computer at their early age. The first issue is that children will lack of human connection skills and interactive abilities between teacher and students. The teachers are very important in class, because they are actually person who communicate with children, not the computers. Many people have argument that children cannot do anything in the computers. Boyle (1998) argues that information technology “may actually be making us stupid.” (p. 618). He argues that the computer takes more of the thinking process out of students. Another issue of using computer for children is that the access of children with diversified information on the computer has Internet connection. Children can access to software that inappropriate to their age such as violence contents, strong language. Another opposing view of using computer for elementary school is that the issue of computer impact to the children’s health. In a viewpoint showed that” If a child were to be functioning on a computer for a long interlude of time or with incorrect positioning they will inadvertently obstruct their own health, some problems caused from this include muscular-skeletal injuries and vision problem” (MacArthur & Shneiderman, 1986). Moreover, many children are being over using computer and they do not spend much time doing exercise, homework. It is a bad impact to children grade. There may be some true in their opposite viewpoints, however it cannot deny that the advantages computer bring to children. An article showed that “the use of computer at an early age-even when led by an adult-can open a child’s mind to idea and concepts that will kindle a great desire for learning, and perhaps make a child smarter” (Victoria Irwin). Computers can bring bad impacts when children do not know the way to use them reasonable. However, when children learn to balance their time on the computer or have the direction of teacher, parents, children can totally receive the benefits of computer with their lives. In conclusion, the advantages of computer policies for elementary outweigh the disadvantages. Computers play an important role in education and the positive impact that they bring to children are no denying. The bad impacts are appearance just when children do not balance the time to use computers and over using them. The teacher and parents should have measures to help children use computer reasonable.
