Business Research Methods, Part I
The development of a research question for Starbucks Coffee Company will raise a serious inquiry regarding the dislikes and likes of its current beverage and food choices. In addition to the conceivable options of dinner and lunch, several results arose for Starbucks.
Development and Definition of Our Research Question
Starbucks Coffee Company has assumed that current economic tensions have a huge influence on the desire for spending. According to Survival and Growth Enterprise LLC, (2008), “Cutting back on spending is related strongly to feelings that prices have increased in the past months, fears of job difficulties ahead, and consumers feeling they cannot afford to sustain their current rate of spending” (Para. 7). The following question is up for research and evaluation:
Should Starbucks Coffee Company introduce a variety of lunch and dinner items to its menu'
Determination of an Appropriate Research Design and Its Characteristics
The appropriate research design has to create an atmosphere where a team opens their mind to the research question. The characteristics, such as independent and dependent variables, and operational definitions must be evaluated in the research design. According to Cooper and Schindler (2006), “A researcher that is creative benefits from a range of options. The combinations created by the mind may be tools used to assemble different perspectives to the same problem.” Two-stage design will be used to design our research study. Collaboration among our research team will be web based. Therefore, collaboration among the variables will achieve the following list in exploratory studies (Cooper & Schindler, 2006).
• Establish the major dimensions of the research task
• Define a set of subsidiary investigative questions that can be used as guides to a detailed research design.
• Develop several hypotheses about possible caused of management dilemma
• Learn that certain other hypotheses are such remote possibilities that they can be safely ignored in any subsequent study
• Concluded additional research is not needed or is not feasible
The appropriate research design will inhibit research questions for customers from ages 25 to 65. The majority of Starbuck’s customers are generally students who may need something more than beverages and pastries. By designing lunch and dinner menu option questions targeted toward customers ages 25 to 65, will ultimately allow Starbucks coffee shop to create an excellent environment for this population. The research questions will also allow the customers to add any additional ideas for increasing the profitability of Starbucks.
The characteristics for the Starbucks coffee shop will be based on the appropriate research design questions and answers. If results would be that customers would purchase from the lunch and dinner menu, the best thing to do next is to create an excellent menu. The main characteristics of the menu would be the quality of the food options by creating a menu that would be healthy, portioned, and affordable.
Identification of a Sample Design That Will Be Used to Collect Our Data
Learning Team A will use the Stratified Sampling Method. Our team decided to use this sample method because it is low cost and allows for statistical efficiency. The Stratified Sampling Method will also allow the team to enable different research methods and procedures that can be used for the different sub-populations. The sample size will be between 50 and 60 persons and the sample populations will be males and females between the ages of 25 and 65 who have frequented a Starbucks coffee shop. The sample will ask a few choice questions on how popular a lunch and dinner menu will be if introduced at Starbucks shops. The questions will be asked via e-mail to keep costs to a minimum with time efficiency. Each email will ask various questions based on the idea of lunch and dinner options. A collection of the research answers will assist Team A with determining if Starbucks should introduce lunch and dinner options. The questions that will be asked are as follows:
1. How often do you purchase items from Starbucks'
2. Would you purchase lunch or dinner items at Starbucks'
3. With an introduction of lunch or dinner options at Starbucks, how likely is it that the popularity of the business would increase'
4. Would you consider take-out items for lunch and dinner'
