Madison Seifert 3/06/11 Pd.2 Excessive Punishment Child abuse, death penalty, and even suspension can be considered excessive punishment in many cases. Excessive punishment leads to many conflicts and hard lives in the new generation like wars and even fights between children and their parents. “12 year old Alexa Gonzalez a student at Junior high school in Queens was caught ‘doodling’ on her desk by her Spanish teacher. Not only has been suspended but she was handcuffed and arrested”. See this story doesn’t make too much sense but it is a true story practicing the point of punishment. Details were probably left out but what is sending this poor girl to jail going to do' “Don’t doodle on your desk anymore”' I’ve read this story many times observing and reading what took place that day in Queens and the punishment didn’t match the crime. You can’t fight violence with violence. Now this one little mistake brought young Alexa to jail and she will turn into a worse person then she was before the sentence to jail. If you think about it, Alexa will be introduced to things in jail she didn’t even know existed and it wont be the good things. Maybe she will get involved with drugs and leave jail ruining her life for one stupid mistake. I take into consideration that life is hard sometimes but that was completely unreasonable and most definitely will not be teaching the right lesson. Another side of excessive torture would be child abuse. “In Kentucky they are studying how this harsh punishment can impair the emotional development of a child”. I don’t think parents realize that their children aren’t pets that can be thrown around and treated poorly. During this generation more and more elders are starting to take advantage of the power they actually have as a guardian. In most cases the children grow up to become the abusers like their parents because they weren’t taught any different. We are on a hamster wheel that we can never get off. “Abuse can possibly lead to anxiety disorders such as social phobia, separation anxiety, and panic attacks” says Science daily. They are scarred for life, creating a world of hatred and violence. Our main leaders of our countries have caused many wars and we cant afford to have anymore so unless we stop punishing our future generations we are screwed. In the 90’s a man named Khodorkovsky was arrested for stealing billions of dollars of oil in Moscow. He was sentenced to jail for seven years. This wasn’t that bad for what he did but then his luck turned for the worst. His cell mates throughout the years despised him causing false accusations. In the middle of the night in 2003 he was attacked in his sleep. He was slapped, whipped, and dragged on the jail floor. Khodorkovsky was accused for sexual harassment to his cell mates and was sentenced another 9 years. His case is still on trial and hasn’t been getting any better. He has become paranoid causing him to scream out random sayings like “We are all going to blow up” says Khodorkovsky. It is a big deal in Moscow and many of the people are on his side wanting him to be set free. Seven years was good enough but now the punishment has gone too far when he wasn’t even the one sexually harassing them. It was a false crime. Being beaten and whipped only sent a message to the court not Khodokovsky. We all want peace in the world but lets get real here, do woodchucks really chuck wood' The violence rate needs to be lowered for the children of the future generations and even your employees. Our bodies can’t handle excessive pain; it just doesn’t work like that. It’s a harsh subject and fines can be given or prison but physically pushes our rights as citizens. “Statistics from the 2007 WBI-Zogby survey show that 13% of U.S employees are currently bullied, 24% also have been bullied in the past and 12% witness workplace bullying. Nearly half of all American workers (49%) have been affected by workplace bullying, either being targeted themselves or have witnessed abusive behavior against a co-worker.” Says clarity digital group. Workplace punishment has another way of looking at compared to court punishment. This has to do with deeper emotions like a hard childhood can inflict on how you would treat other people. For example, your associate. You can’t let your personal life into work. This is what’s causing all of the harm to the employees in America and the fact of disobedience to your superiors. Another factor is the race a person is can influence harmfull punishments. “1. Hispanics (52.1%) 2. Blacks(46%) 3. Whites(33.5%) 4. Asian(30.6%)” In my opinion this explains everything for me. Our country said that segregation is behind us but now its stronger than ever. You should be proud of your background and shouldn’t believe you get punished for it. All we can do now is try to change abuse, punishment, and segregation for the better.
