Public Relations and Professionalism What are some examples from the article of the importance for members of the private security industry to possess the same level of professionalism as the public officers' Every member of a private security firm need to be professional at all times and the same goes with police officers too. If a mistake is made on both parties sides then the risk of a suspect or a case could be jeopardized. The biggest reason that private security officers need to be professional is because we hear too many times an officer abusing his/her authority. This could cause for a private firm to receive a bad image and risk a law suit. As the article states, many states require that private security officers undergo some type of training to prepare themselves for what they could encounter on the job and how to deal with those situations. This simply means that private security officers need some of the basic training that police officers go through and that they need to follow the same regulations as that of public police officers (Goldstein, 2007). In hind site they are performing the same duties as police officers without the power to arrest. How can a negative image impact the security of a given community' A negative image towards any private security firm can have an adverse effect on the firm. The articles example was that of a man who was assaulted by certain security guards in front of his family (Goldstein, 2007). This is a prime example of unprofessional acts towards the community that counts on them for their safety. When we have private security officers take their job and the badge of honor they wear to extents of abuse this can give the firm a bad image. Also law suits can be filed against the firm and criminal charges against the officers themselves. How can this image be improved' Negative images can be improved by simply giving the officers the proper training. This allows for the officers to be able to do their job to the fullest extent but within the guidelines drawn out for them. Ethical issues will always be an issue with private security firms and without the training the officers will continue to use bad judgment when issues arise. Procedures must always be followed and ethical judgment must always be followed to ensure that the company continues to have a positive image to the public.
