Level 3 Assignment 1 – Theory
3.1.3 Explain how you could promote inclusion, equality and diversity with your current/future learners. Identify other points of referral available to meet the potential needs of learners.
Inclusion
In teaching we need to understand and cater for the different potentials and needs of our students. To promote inclusion in further education we must involve all the students in classroom practices by valuing their uniqueness, we must ensure that we respect the rights of all our students and be careful not to discriminate in any way. From our initial classroom assessment we can plan and develop our approach to each individual student to ensure that their needs and requirements are identified and encompassed in a comprehensive training plan.
Equality
Students in college today come from multi-cultural backgrounds, of differing race, ethnic origin and religion. As well as this we encounter disability, different gender and sexual orientation. We need to create a learning environment that is conducive to learning for all these students, this will involve ensuring accessibility for the disabled student as well as incorporating for others, different learning styles by using multi sensory delivery, incorporating auditory, visual and kinesthetic techniques. Every student must have the opportunity to fulfill their potential.
Diversity
We must embrace diversity in the classroom; it can be seen as a contrast to equality and to coin a phrase, “We are all individuals” (Monty Python). We must place a positive value upon it and use it as an educational resource. As well as ethnic and religious diversity we will have older students who can contribute because of life experience.
When the teacher is not equipped to meet a students learning needs a referral will have to be made, this will assist the student and enable equal opportunity within the classroom. The sorts of issues that may arise are attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, spelling and numeracy skills or with foreign students English may not be a first language which would cause great difficulty.
To promote inclusion I ensure that the resources used suit the individual, this might mean providing handouts with larger text, with foreign students avoiding jargon and using simplified English, the inclusion of pictures makes reading more stimulating, rather than pages of text. For foreign students we also make provision for translators to enable equal learning opportunities. We have parking close to the Training Academy for those students who are less mobile and toilets/facilities that are accessible. The classrooms are all on the ground floor for ease of access.
