Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
Levels 4/5
Summarise the key aspects of current legislative requirements and codes of practice relevant to your subject and the type of organisation within you would like to work.
I work for Westminster Adult Education Service. This is a government Institution. I work as a part-time ESOL tutor.
WAES is a Higher Education provider. Its aim is to provide education and training programmes to help students with career access, such as higher level courses or university.
Francis and Gould (2009, p9) states that “The lifelong learning professional also has responsibilities to ensure that current legislative requirements are met”
In this essay I will summarise the key legislative and codes of practice that are relevant to my work in the lifelong learning sector. At WAES we have a set of policies which outline how we behave. Currently at WAES there are quite a lot of policies, but I will summarise them into the following categories:
• Curriculum and Quality Policies
• Estates
• Finance
• Health and Safety
• Human Resources
• Student Support
For example, The Curriculum Policy reviewed by the Director of Curriculum & Quality in March 2009, underpins the commitment of the Service to plan, offer and deliver high quality programmes of learning which meet the needs of learners. Within this policy there are:
• Assessment Policy
• Class closure
• Internal Verification
• Quality Policy
• Tutorial Policy
• Withdrawal Policy
Within the Health and Safety Policy, it includes:
• Accidents
• AIDS policy (Oct 2004)
• Alcohol and drugs
• Assaults
• Fire Safety procedures (Jan 2004)
• First Aid Policy (Jan 2004)
• Hazard reporting Policy (Jan 2004)
• No Smoking Policy
• Noise Policy
• Road Risk Policy
• Stress Policy
• Workplace Inspections Jan 2004
As a government Institution, it is regulated and inspected by Ofsted, which regulates institutions in England which provide education to learners of all ages and providers of care for children and young people.
Word Count:
