PTTLS THEORY TASK T2
Legislative Requirements
By Cliff Meese Oct 6th 2010
In teaching there are many different laws and regulations to be taken into account. As well as this there are codes of practice and professional boundaries that must be adhered to.
As I am hoping to teach in the electrical field as well as all of the above there are also different laws and regulations to be taken into account.
These are the main points of legislation to be taken into account with relevance to teaching:-
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
This covers things like safe working practises, mandatory training, P.P.E., health and safety signs, fire procedures, first aid, electrical equipment testing and certification, risk assessments and safe handling.
Equal Opportunities Act 2004
This makes sure no one is discriminated against irrespective of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, nationality and age.
The Protection of Children Act 1994
There are different polices in place to cover this act such as the “Every Child Matters” policy. Other things to cover this subject are having CRB checks, reporting concerns to authority, safety on the premises, having the correct contact information and keeping parents up to date.
This is one of the most important and delicate matters regarding teaching and great care and detail must be taken to work correctly.
Data Protection Act 1998
This act restricts the sharing of data and requires organisations holding data over three months to register as data users. Other things to consider are things like only holding relevant data, not passing data on to anyone, keeping information safe and only holding data for as long as necessary .
Disability Discrimination Act 1995
This gives disabled people rights to education, accessing the facilities and services. This means steps have to be taken to include everyone by having the premises suitably altered where possible like having ramps, disabled toilets, specialised learning equipment, classroom access, signage, and other relevant alterations.
Further Educational and Training Act 2007
This is about continuous professional development, making sure new teachers have relevant qualifications and registering with the I.F.L.
In my particular field of electrics I would have to consider all the regulations and safety issues connected to this potentially dangerous subject to keep the learner’s safe. So keeping up to date and enforcing all the latest regulations is very important.
