Explain the ways in which you would establish ground rules with your learners which underpin behaviour and respect for others. The purpose of ground rules is to establish a safe and happy learning environment for everyone involved in the lesson or learning activity. I think the best way to establish ground rules is to ask the students to generate the list. Ask them to think about what they themselves will need to have a safe learning environment and to achieve the most from the lessons. If the students find it difficult to come up with a ground rule the teacher thinks should be on the list, to prompt them towards it. If, after the prompting, they still don’t understand, add the rule to the list yourself - then ask them if they agree it should be on the list.
