Preparing to teach in the life long learning sector (PTLLS)
Carl Parker
TQ2 : Requirements and codes of practice
Word Count (150 -250)
Tutor : Julia Fullick
Within the teaching role there is much legislation that will inform your practice. In my current role as an HGV ( heavy goods vehicle) driver it is imperative that I have a basic understanding of all current legislation and policies and procedures, within the road traffic act, VOSA (vehicle & operators services agency) regulations and abiding by the highway code. These factors have been implemented in order that there are guidelines in place; it also protects drivers and driving instructors, whilst in the teaching environment.
The following are some key aspects of legislation and codes of practice relevant to my workplace
Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 - this enables me to be aware of the environment and what needs to be done to keep myself, students and other staff members safe.
Working at Height Regulations 2005 - Regulations apply to any work at a height where there is a risk of a fall liable to cause injury. Drivers are often securing their load by climbing up on their trailers.
The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (PPE) - is defined in the regulations as ‘all equipment (including clothing affording protection against the weather) which is intended to be worn or held by a person at work and which protects him or her against one or more risks to his or her health or safety’, e.g., safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses.
