Assignment Part One
A Professional perception or professional context statement (L01)
The role of a teacher is to offer support and guidance whilst having a responsibility of due care and avoiding discrimination against students. Teachers also have a duty to manage appropriate conduct and maintain a professional relationship with learners. (Loveleena, 2010) Roles, Responsibilities and Boundaries are put in place and followed by teachers to ensure that students get the best out of their learning experience and both the lesson and the students are continually developed, assessed and evaluated.
As a teacher I have a responsibility to adhere to all current legislations.
My organisation (Walsall tPCT) is committed to promoting legislative acts in all aspects of employment and service delivery.
The main ones that I will be looking at in my role as a teacher are;
• Disability Discrimination Act 2005
• Data Protection Act 1998
• Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
As a teacher when I am planning my lessons I will need to be conscious of referencing the above acts and the codes of practice that exist within my organisation. And also ensure that I am continually observing the overarching professional standards for teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector, by conforming to statutory requirements and applying codes of practice.
As a teacher it is my duty to promote Disability, Equality and equal opportunities between disabled and non disabled persons, I will need to support learners and ensure that I structure my lessons so that they will include equally people with disabilities in practical activities. I am responsible for avoiding discrimination in my lessons by identifying how the organisation promotes Equality and Diversity but not singling learners out because of their disability. Also informing learners of the Improving Working Lives Standard (IWL) supported by Human Resources (HR) to ensure that learners are fully supported and developed and advise them of the details of the Equality and Diversity officer should they need to raise any issues.
Because I will be dealing with Health Information Systems that contain sensitive and personal data, my role as a teacher will be to inform learners that personal data shall be obtained only for lawful purposes, and shall not be further processed in any manner incompatible with that purpose. It is my responsibility to ensure that learners are aware of the confidentiality guidelines whilst using clinical systems and not to discuss personal patient information with others. Also as a teacher I would keep a register for Fire purposes, completed formative and summative assessment records, and learner evaluation forms which the confidentiality guidelines would also apply to.
The Health and Safety act plays a large part in my job role as both learners and I will be dealing with large quantities of electrical equipment, my overall aim is to provide a safe working environment with safe equipment and relevant training where necessary. I cannot be seen to be taking risks when using equipment i.e. trailing wires and incorrect VDU use.
To develop my competence further in meeting the above legislation I could ensure that regular PAT testing is taking place to comply with Health and Safety. And also conforming to Data Protection and Patient Confidentiality policy by possibly using an interactive icebreaker in sessions so that learners can discuss why Data Protection and Confidentiality is important to both the learners and the Organisation as a whole. I could incorporate various learning styles and further develop learner’s functional skills by using flipcharts and white boards to strengthen their English and literacy skills, and PowerPoint quizzes to introduce them to new software and develop their ICT skills. Initial Assessments can be useful also, either in a classroom environment or one to one with the learner to decide their starting points and their next steps. Initially by completing a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) and further evaluating the learner and myself as a teacher by the means of an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for the learner and a Personal Development Journal (PDJ) for myself as a teacher. (Gransden, 2004)
To ensure that I am committed to Equality and Diversity and Inclusivity in my role as a teacher I will need to act upon the following guidelines and any issues that arise from them.
Promote good relations amongst groups; Ensuring that every learner is treated equally and given the opportunity to participate in all activities, seeing that all students regardless of disability are able to partake in practical exercises.
• Work towards the elimination of unlawful discrimination; act as a positive role model within and outside the learning environment.
• Discuss ground rules with learners before the start of each lesson; outline the key aspects of Equality and Diversity to make learners aware that everybody is included and offered an equal opportunity.
• When developing handouts for learners; ensure they are done in a gender free way, and when using pictures and developing data to input into the systems, try incorporating a variety of people of different races, ethnicity, gender, and ages.
• Providing different learning materials to include all students regardless of learning style; this could include, ensuring that handouts are in a large enough text for sight impaired students to read, ensuring that ranges of coloured papers are used for learners with difficulties reading text. I.e. black writing on yellow paper for learners with dyslexia. Speaking clearly or using audible methods of learning for learners that may have difficulty seeing or reading text.
To ensure that I am constantly keeping track of both the learners and my progression;
• For learners; at the end of each lesson I will evaluate each of the individual learner’s progression and needs by means of evaluation forms and ILP’s (Petty, 2004 p509)
• For myself as a teacher; at the end of each session I will draw information from learners ILP’s and feedback as necessary, and also daw from the lesson experience and evaluation comments and create a PDJ for every lesson. This will enable me to be critical of my lessons and my actions as a teacher, treat it as a learning curve and build them it into positive action points for future sessions.
