Pttls 4 Q1 Theory Assignment – PTTLS Level 4 Question 1 Review what your role, responsibilities and boundaries as a teacher/trainer would be in terms of the teaching/training cycle In reviewing and summarising my own role, responsibility and boundaries in relation to training, I will be reflecting and discussing my own methods and how they impact on how I design training modules. As my role may sometimes involve the training of the finished product to other trainers, I shall also draw on my experiences in train the trainer sessions. The teaching/training cycle The teaching/training cycle (“Identify Needs”, “Plan”, “Enable”, “Assess” and “QA and Evaluate”) is crucial for the overall learning of students, if they are to be given every opportunity to come away from the session having retained the new knowledge they have just been given. Preparation is the key to enable all other aspects of training to flow smoothly. Identify Needs This means finding out the needs of the organisation and the learners; in my current role this is done either by the use of a training needs analysis (TNA) or through discussions with stakeholders. Plan This is both preparing the environment and also the material for delivery, and in my role as a designer I have a greater control over the latter. I am aware that the environment should be suitable for learning (e.g. not too bright/dark or cold/warm), and with all delivery resources and handouts available. The material I create should belong to an overall scheme of work, wherever possible, to ensure continuity of learning and it is my responsibility to ensure that there are clear and concise lesson plans. My role as a designer is to prepare a scheme of work and session plans to deliver group or individual learning, based upon the needs of the organisation, the syllabus and the learners. Enable This basically means teaching (and learning) in a suitable manner. The trainer will need to ensure that they act and speak appropriately while in the classroom environment and would need to observe different learning styles in order to keep all learners engaged and interested in the subject being taught. For the most successful learning event, trainers will need to continually adjust their delivery against the skills of the group. In order to help facilitate this, my role is to create the material so that it is as fluid as possible, and to help trainers identify clear section divides between each topic. Assess This is ensuring your learners have gained the necessary skills and knowledge. Assessments can take many forms, from formal/informal, multiple choice questions, to role plays and practical assessments. As a designer, this falls into my realm of responsibility, and I have undertaken a number of courses to ensure that I write as robust an assessment as possible. QA and Evaluate This means obtaining feedback from the learners and evaluating in order to modify or make changes to future courses. I currently receive feedback on the assessments via our Learning Management System, and use this to rework any unsuccessful question where required. We also use online questionnaires (via the Survey Monkey site) and post training questionnaires to capture learners’ feedback following courses. The Role and Responsibilities of a Trainer. One of the main roles of a trainer is to create effective and stimulating learning opportunities whilst at the same time valuing all of their learners individually and equally, following professional values and ethics. They should plan their sessions by creating lesson plans, prepare any required training materials, assess their learners and evaluate themselves/their delivery throughout. The professional should always keep records of the teaching sessions, such as lesson plans and progression reports of the learners and refer learners to other people or agencies when necessary. One of the main responsibilities of a professional trainer is to gain the skills which are required for the subject in which they intend to teach. They should ensure that they have relevant literacy, numeracy and computer skills (and preferably qualifications) wherever possible. As a designer it is my responsibility to create material which assists a trainer in achieving all the above, including creating the required material and assessments in an easily-adaptable format should this be required. The Boundaries of a Trainer. A true professional will be aware of all personal boundaries (not invading someone’s space, not getting involved emotionally, etc) but will also recognise where their own knowledge boundaries are, and refer learners to other individuals or areas of study which may help them. To assist with this, wherever possible I will identify areas for further learning and detail these in the trainer’s notes. Word Count = 740
