Assignment one Explain the five stages of the Training cycle, describing your role, responsibilities and professional boundaries as teacher at each stage. Identify current legislative requirements and codes of practice relevant to your subject specialism and the type of organisation within which you work/would like to work. The Training cycle – (Kolb) Page 2 Identifying needs and planning Teaching can take on many forms and at this stage it is important to establish, what where, and how the subject can be delivered. Market research can identify the need for the subject to be taught. Advertising in public areas where there may be of interest for the course. Location of the course and suitable venues .Contact Awarding bodies to check if they will give approval for a qualification to be given to students on successfully completing the course. Design and planning It is important to create the right environment in which to deliver the lesson to the students. A suitable room with a seating plan that will enable students to be comfortable and be able to see and hear clearly .Make use of available resources. Applying different teaching methods and introduce learning aids and practical equipment that will make the subject interesting and fun to learn Facilitating Decide how the lesson will be delivered, It may be formal or informal or a combination of both. The factors which dictate include age of students, subject matter. Are there enough students to form groups fro discussions or practical work. Make the aims and targets clear and summarize often throughout the lesson highlighting key point’s .leave time at the end of the lesson so students can ask questions or have a point of view Assessing There are various methods of assessment that a tutor can use has taken place. Taking an initial assessment of a student to find out if they are competent and capable of passing .Or whether they will require further tutoring in other skills first, Formative assessments are ongoing during the learning process. Summative is where a pass or fail situation can establish if the learning process has been successful. Evaluations By evaluating at the end of the course this can identify the highs and lows, the success of the students and the tutor .A self evaluation as a tutor is important in continuing professional development. Methods of evaluation include. Feedback forms from awarding bodies, students and employers. On going journals from students, evaluations of exam results or pass rates. These can all evaluate the need for change or improvement to current learning. Professional boundaries Professional boundaries can occur at any stage of the training cycle and provide the tutor the challenge and not to overstep them. Boundaries that may arise include • Social interaction –kept professional • Equality-the rights of learners despite age ,gender race or religion • Diversity- cultural differences • Confidentiality-to protect student and tutor • Duty of care towards your students Page 3 Legislation As a tutor it is important to be aware of the current legislation and the codes of practice. Five examples are legislation Aim Equality act (2006) To eliminate discrimination ,protect human rights and reduce inequality and give all a chance to participate in society , Data protection act(1998) The correct manner in which to obtain , hold .use or disclose information and records relating to staff and students The protection of children act (1999) And criminal records bureau checks The responsibility to act if a child is in danger or signs of child abuse and notify local authorities. Disability discrimination act(2005) Any students with disabilities have the rights to learn and given the necessary adaption’s to achieve this Sex discrimination act (1975) Give men and women the equal chances to learn and not to discriminate about marital status My chosen subject to teach is Dental nursing and helping students qualify for the National certificate for Dental Nursing .some of the legislations that apply include legislation Aim Environmental protection act (1990) To protect the environment from emissions to land air or water , this particularly applies to the waste management process within our practice .and they way in which all waste products are segregated to ensure correct disposal Data protection act(1998) The correct manner in which to obtain, hold, use or disclose information and records relating to our patients. This includes confidentiality between ourselves and patients The protection of children act (1999) And criminal records bureau checks The responsibility to act if a child is seen to be danger or signs of child abuse or neglect and notify local authorities. Freedom of information act (2000) This obligates the dental profession to allow their patients access to their dental records Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH). The regulations are designed to protect staff and patients from risks associated with hazardous substances produced ,handled transported nor disposed of within the dental environment page 4 Codes of practice The General Dental Council (GDC). Is the governing body of the dental profession' All dental professionals must be registered with GDC.It sets the standards and it has six codes of practice • Putting patients’ interest first and acting to protect them • Respecting patients’ dignity and choices • Protecting patients’ confidential information • Co-operating with other members of the dental team and other healthcare colleagues in the interests of the patients • Maintaining your professional knowledge and competence • Being trustworthy Conclusion From observing the legislation applied to teaching I find it very similar to the legislation that apply to the dental profession, and that I already can conduct myself in the professional manner required. I have gained a better understanding to the cycle and that each stage is conducive to the next resulting in an increased performance for when the cycle is repeated.
