Assessment 2 Within the teaching role there is much legislation that will inform your practice. Within my current role the following legislation informs my practice: The Data Protection Act 1998 gives individuals the right to know what information is held about them. It provides a framework to ensure that personal information is handled properly. Personal information must be fairly processes for the correct purpose. It should be adequate, relevant, accurate and up to date. It also must be kept securely and not kept longer than necessary. Information should also not be disclosed unless permission is sought or it is a matter of safeguarding. It is also important to realise that individuals have the right to view any records that are kept on them. And as a teacher you are accountable for everything that you do. Within every work place you are accountable to the Health and Safety at work act 1974 and teaching is no exception. You should be aware of the room layout, equipment including electrical wiring and PAT testing. In some areas of teaching it may be necessary to provide learners with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including overalls, goggles and gloves etc. It is important that you make sure learners are aware of the housekeeping of the venue including fire exits and planned drills. First Aid is also covered under this legislation. It is important in this instance to know who the first aider is for the organisation. It is also important to take into consideration the behaviour of learners and the misuse of equipment within your health and safety responsibilities. Another important piece of legislation within teaching is the equal opportunities acct 2004. It is important to make sure that everyone has the same right to learning opportunities within your classroom but it is also about recognising the differences in people to offer them learning that is tailored to meet their requirements. You can do this by using images that are positive and avoid stereotyping making sure you are conscious to explain terminology to make sure that everyone understands and no one feels left out. It makes also be necessary to refer learners for additional support for example they make need one to one support within the classroom environment. Within the teaching environment it is important to use a common language and also to make sure that resources are also inclusive so are in an appropriate colour, font size and style. As a teacher it is my responsibility to be professional and practice behaviours that are expected from teaching staff. These include; Integrity, Respect, Care, Practice, Disclosure and Responsibility. 435
