Explain how you could promote inclusion, equality and diversity with you current/future learners. Identify other points of referral available to meet the potential needs of learners.
To try and promote inclusion in the classroom it could be very beneficial to start with some ‘Ice Breakers’ activities this could help the students to get to know each other and build a friendly classroom atmosphere that they feel relaxed in, as it can be quite daunting for some adults to come back into the classroom environment again. Moving on from ice breakers there are a number of ways of promoting inclusion in the classroom, teaching methods such as class and group debates are a good way of doing this, these can help as it allows everyone to participate although it has its limitations as some people may not participate and a few people could dominate more than others. Other methods include role plays, case studies, and guest speakers these all have their own strengths but also their own limitations so careful consideration and planning is required before doing any, you should also ensure that your teaching method matches your learning objectives for the class, for example, if you have set a skill focused objective then the techniques you use should give the learners the opportunities to observe, practise and build on the skill, you should also consider the individual needs of the students as they will undoubtedly have different ways in which they respond to the method which you have chosen to give them the information you require them to learn. It is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure that every student is treated equally; feels valued, and respected and should actively promote these. No two students are the same, differences should be identified and teaching adapted to support the individual learning needs and abilities and therefore promoting inclusion. Any learning barrier should be monitored effectively throughout the course. Supporting students with disabilities equally is important and may include adapting handouts using visual aids or arranging a seat at the front of the class for visually impaired students, or keeping eye contact with students with a hearing impairment might help as they may be able to lip read. Identifying these individuals’ needs will promote a sense of inclusion, equality and diversity. The environment aspects should also be considered, things such as ensuring there is sufficient space in the classroom if doing activities such as role plays, acoustics and sightlines are important if you are planning on doing things such as demonstrations so everyone can see and hear what is happening during it.
As a teacher it is important to know of other points of referral available to the students and be able to give them some information on these facilities so as they can decide on which would be best suited for them should they need to avail of them, these include but not limited to services such as;
• Cancer Help lines
• Citizens Advice Bureau
• Victim Support NI
• Family Planning Association
• Education Guidance for Adults (E.G.S.A)
• National Drugs Helpline
