Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Lifelong Learning Heather Jones-a251142 30/09/2013-YP3APT2120 Page 1 The Roles and Responsibilities of a Teacher are varied and complex through the whole of the five key Roles of the Teaching and learning cycle.... from Identifying needs to Quality assurance and Evaluation the cycle continuously flows and over laps as the ever changing needs of the Teacher & Learner grow and progress. As a Teacher in the LLS there is a great importance on understanding your own role and responsibilities of your chosen subject ( Hairdressing).Teaching roles can be from a wide spectrum of places,Colleges-Army- Prisons-Work placed training to Independent Business’s keyed to teaching a specific role, it will require you to be Committed-Professional and Competent at all times. Key Roles will include: 1)Meeting Learners,Parents/Guardians,Internal-External staff. 2)Finding out course requirements. 3)Interviews for Learners. 4)Observing your Students learning styles. 5)Attending courses-meetings & training. 6)Being professional, responsible and respectful. 7)Communicating and liaising with Learners, employers-colleagues and other Internal & External bodies. 8)Planning lessons-choosing & resourcing equipment, tools and literature needed. 9)Ensuring placement is clean, safe, adequately heated and/or ventilated. 11)Ensuring all Learners are made to feel welcome-valued and equal. 12)Making sure that course is the correct one for the Learner through interview and tutorial giving advice & guidance where needed. 13)Assessing the needs & learning styles of your group making them feel relaxed and comfortable. 14)Addressing Codes of conduct, Time tables, all other information including contacts, phone numbers, where to go & what to do In case of a fire alarm, Incidents of bullying/harassment etc. 15)Evaluating yourself on Code of conduct, production of course material, how it went, things that need to be looked at or changed. Listening & valuing the opinions of your Learners, Learning & growing yourself, how can things can be improved. Along side this comes Responsibilities of your own professional conduct to the welfare of your Learners & the organization you work for. They Include: 1)Registering with the IFL, No longer compulsory but definitely beneficial. 2)CRB checks, Compulsory when working with Learners. If you were to be cautioned or convicted of an offence it is your duty to inform your Employers. 3)Record keeping, This can be anything from class register as it will high light any patterns of absence so it can be addressed, it may be that the Learner has issues & through talking you maybe able to give advice or information on where to go. The register is also important in case of a fire alarm. Records also include initial interview notes, course enrolment, confidential details such as email address, phone numbers, previous examination results if any. All records are covered by the: Data Protection Act 1998) Records are usually kept for Three years 4)Risk assessments 5)Course plans & follow up one to ones to assess Learners understanding & progress. 6)Acting Professionally & setting an example, Swearing, talking about something confidential, being to familiar & giving out personal information would not be deemed as suitable behaviour. 7)Keeping up to date with new relevant information , techniques within your chosen Industry including changes to Legislation. 8)Marking work on time, giving Learners feedback & constructive comments, also checking for plagiarisms. 9)Encouraging Learners to be consistent-respectful-conscientious allowing them room to grow & reach their full potential. As a Hairdressing Teacher there is Legislation and codes of practice in place to ensure the welfare & safety of all people within the organization. The one thing all Teachers have in common is the need to follow & adhere these. Legislation is forever changing so therefore it is necessary to be up to date with new changes. There are Two types of Legislation the first is Generic which cover individuals the next one is Specific and relates to the job title. Generic Legislation and Codes of Practise Includes 1)Data Protection Act (2008) 2)Institute of Learning (IFL) Code of Professional Practise(2008) 3)Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (2006) 4)Code of Professional Practise (2008) 5)Freedom of Information Act (2000) 6)Equality Act (2010) 7)The Further Education Teachers Qualifications (England) Regulations (2007) 8)Inspections Requirements (Ofsted) Specific Legislation Includes 1)Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations (2002) As a Hairdresser, there will be daily usage of potential life threatening chemicals so the correct way to use & dispose of these is essential. 2)The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act (1974) This act is in place to cover all Employers & Employees within the work place. There should be a copy that is given out on starting a job or available on request. It will explain all policies covering Fire evacuation, No smoking Policy & First aid, it will tell you where to go, who to see & designated places. It is important to read these as failure to comply could result in gross-misconduct putting yourself & others at risk. Example-it is against the law to smoke inside any public space, not only are you breaking the law you are also potentiality endangering others health & it also poses as a fire hazard. As a student of college there is a Student Citizenship Code Which states any smoking in non-smoking areas as a misconduct, therefore could lead to exclusion from college. 1.2-Equality & Diversity As a Hairdressing Teacher I would be responsible for promoting equality & valuing diversity of all individuals, Therefore it is essential that I treat everyone as a individual but in equal terms. It is not necessary for me to know all personal aspects of a Learners life, although some will relate to how a student learns. Gravells said “In the past, equality has often been described as everyone being the same or having the same opportunities. Nowadays, it can be described as everyone being different, but having equal rights” (Gravells. A, 2012a, p.8) A Student may have: 1)Learning difficulties,-Dyslexia-Hearing impairment. alternative learning material should be implemented into course such as visual or audio. 2)Age 3)Gender 4)Religion 5)Sexual-Orientation 6)Lifestyle 7)Criminal convictions 8)Language-Accent barrier All of these are covered by The Equality Act (2010) Therefore in my own role as a Teacher it is my responsibility to identify each Learners needs & assess how I can meet their needs or direct them to the right person, organization or department to ensure they receive equal rights which will enhance & aid their learning. For instance we today except that we live in a multi-cultural society, by incorporating discussions-opportunities to experience different cultures it devalues peoples prejudices and shows how diversity is equal and is to be valued within our society. “You must not allow any form of discrimination in your classroom or learning situation. Not only is it morally wrong,it is likely to be illegal” (Reece & Walker,2007:295, in Gravells.A, 2012b, p.17) In Hairdressing there are many hair types, styles & traditions. Students could do a demonstration particular styles. Example-How do wedding styles differ within different cultures! By exploring this it not only gives students knowledge but enhances their practical learning. Part 2 As well as having your your Learners responsibilities & your own to think of there will also be other professionals to interact with. Some will be Internal such as other Teachers, Administration staff, Caretakers, Security & Support workers others will be External including Employers, Parents/guardians, Assessors/Verifiers, Examination bodies, & other Visitors. It is important to remain professional & remember boundaries. Your Code of conduct is a direct reflection on your organization. The (IFL) which came into force in 2008 includes-Integrity-Respect-Care-Practise-Disclosure and Responsibility. Failure to adhere to these could see yourself in a negative light and impact badly. Example-Disclosure...All employees working within the learning sector are required to be checked by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) if working with children or vulnerable adults. It is your responsibility to inform your employers of any changes of circumstance. Example Cautioning/conviction of an offence, so the correct disciplinary procedure can be implemented if necessary. Failure to do this could result in not full filling your contract and losing your job. Each Learner is individual and so are their needs therefore it is important to assess them. An initial assessment & individual learning plan will help you find out your Learners ideas, strengths/weakness & constraints. It may be that they are capable of doing the work but suffer with lack of confidence. Encouragement and one to one assessment could build the Learners self esteem & confidence. Needs of learners can include: 1)Behaviour difficulties,-ADHD 2)Learning difficulties,-Dyslexia 3)Family commitments,-Single parent 4)Language barrier,-English as second language Behaviour code 3 of the IFL Code of professional practise states: “Members shall take reasonable care to ensure the safety and welfare of learners and comply with relevant statutory provisions to support their well-being and development” (IFL 2008, In Gravells.A, 2012c, p.51) The end result of meeting your Learners needs will be that they full fill their potential & pass their exams. As a Teacher there should be no greater reward than to see your Learners grow in confidence, knowledge and skills. Here is a quote from Burn (1995, p.233) By adulthood people are self-directing this is the concept that lies at the heart of andragogy... andragogy is therefore self-centred, experience- based, problem-oriented and collaborative very much in the spirit of the humanist approach to learning and education...the whole educational activity turns on the student. By failing to evaluate your own role effectively you are also failing your learners, they look to you not only for knowledge & skills but also for direction, values & moral standing. In Hairdressing there will be all ages but a large majority will come straight from school. By keeping firm but fair expectations from the start this will give them a good foundation to work from. Establishing & Maintaining a safe supportive learning environment is your responsibility as well the organizations. 1)Have you booked the room, informed students of room number. 2)Arrived early so you can check for issue's...i.e Is it tidy, do the tables & chairs need to be arranged differently for your class to be successful, will everyone be able to see you,the board, any other material you may be demonstrating. 3)Is everything working, Lights, computers, white board. If not then who is responsible for fixing them, allow time to sort these things out so there is minimal disruption to your Students learning time. “The physical (comfort requirements) can be met by providing adequate breaks, ensuring comfort, arranging seats according to needs and being alert to heating and ventilation requirements.” (Maslow 1962,in Reece and Walker, (2007,p.77) in Gravells.A, 2012b, p.21) Promoting appropriate behaviour & respect for others should be foremost as failure to do so will set a bad example to Learners, they are there to learn from your skill & expertise. If you can not show good behaviour & respect to others then how can you expect it of your Learners. having a group discussion on what everyone expects at the beginning of course, writing it down & getting Learners to agree to this sets the boundaries from the beginning and there can be no misconception of what is expected. 1)Good time keeping 2)Dressing appropriately 3)Being polite 4)No swearing 5)No giving out personal information, this keeps you in a professional light. reference guide Burns (1995,p.233)Oxford Brookes University[online] [accessed 30th September 2013] Available at: Gravells,A and Simpson,S (2012a) Equality and Diversity in the lifelong learning sector 2nd edition.
