7303 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) Assignment 1 – Describe what your role, responsibilities and boundaries would be as a teacher in terms of the teaching/training cycle. The teacher/training cycle is as follows; [pic] Identify needs and planning This would involve an initial assessment for the facilitator to identify the individual needs of the class e.g. some one who is dyslexic may need help with written work or someone who has English as a second language may need additional help and support. You need to be aware of the needs of the awarding body (e.g. City and Guilds). The syllabus would describe what needs to be delivered to your students and give guide lines on the marking criteria. Designing. Once the needs and planning phase has been carried out the facilitator will include designing the assignments to cover objectives and learning out comes of relevant units of study, this would mean making sure that you are covering relevant criteria in the syllabus. Designing and preparing your environment e.g. workshop floor, hair salon or gymnasium etc to accommodate the needs of all learners, this will mean ensuring you plan for your students individual needs e.g. making sure a wheel chair would have easy access to the gymnasium etc. Designing and preparing resources to accommodate the needs of all learners, this will mean you have appropriate resources for the group, If you were doing a cookery course for the group vegetarians you would not make a meat dish expecting them to taste it! Look again at individual needs Designing and preparing handouts to accommodate the needs of all learners for example in brail or in other language. Facilitate. The facilitator will deliver the designed programme in an exciting and stimulating manner. You could do this by making sure you fully include the group at all times. You should understand the learning process and how an initial assessment of the students will help you better plan for their needs. By using a variety of teaching methods you will be able to engage all students. Two popular approaches to learning style theory include: VARK – These 3 primary learning channels are: • Visual – Learn by seeing • Auditory – Learn by hearing • Reading – Learn by reading • Kinaesthetic – Learn by doing Honey and Mumford This theory suggests learners are a mixture of the following: • Activist – People who like activities and dealing with problems • Pragmatist – People who are practical and logical • Theorist – People who need to read a lot of material before understanding a task • Reflector – People who think deeply about things and like tried and tested methods. By ongoing assessment of your students you will know if their needs are being met and know if they fully understand the course details you delivering. This could be done by personal and group tutorials. . Assess. There are two ways to assess your students, these are: Formative assessment – ongoing, project, tasks and assignments, throughout the course of study to facilitate growth and development. Summative assessment – at the end of an assignment or module, can include written test and usually a pass or referral situation, which ensures the learner has learnt the necessary skills and knowledge. Evaluate. On a regular basis it is useful to obtain feedback from the students to ensure the needs for them have been met. This could be done by mini questionnaires to see if any improvements can be made. Constant evaluation of your own performance will enable you to modify or make changes to the way you teach. This may mean a change in your style of teaching to accommodate the class or individual student. Boundaries. Possible boundaries that could arise that could hinder you from Identifying needs and planning could be: • Changes in legislation that could mean your policies and procedures are not relevant. This could mean you are giving your class false information e.g. about behavior, health and safety etc. • Your lack of subject knowledge could hinder how you deliver your class. You need to be up to date and in touch with the course you are delivering. • You need to know your learners, make sure you have plenty of information about them before they start your class i.e. through registration or an interview. Lack of knowledge on them may mean they are on the wrong type of course. Knowing your learners should be an ongoing process which will enable you to identify any needs that may arise. • A lack of resources may hinder your delivery of a course for example if you turn up to teach a class with all your information on a memory stick and your class room has no computer or overhead projector how will you deliver! Check environments out before you start your class to ensure everything meets the things you need. • Having an inappropriate environment for example it could be dull, uninspiring, this could suppress your delivery of the course dulling your enthusiasm. • Having faulty technology such as computer, overhead projector, CD player. • A lack of previous experience in the deliverance of course material. • Unsure of how to differentiate the course material to suit all ages and abilities. • If students are missing lessons then you will not be able to deliver correctly. ----------------------- Identify needs and plan Assess Evaluate Design Facilitate
