Thank you for choosing C Company Training Ltd as your preferred training provider and for your booking on the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) course that is running from the 4th to the 8th April 2011.
Over the next few pages you will find information that will be useful prior to, and when attending the course.
Course Overview
The award is a level 4 qualification and consists of 6 sections including a micro teach lesson of a subject of your choice. It has been designed to enable the assessment of a candidate’s ability to design and deliver learning programmes, monitor their own performance and development and to identify the needs and styles of a learner.
How is the award achieved'
It is achieved by the assessment of your ability to carry out a series of tasks and to ascertain your competence in those areas. During the course you will be assessed on the following areas:-
1. Understand your role and responsibilities and the boundaries of your role in teaching
2. Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area
3. Demonstrate session planning skills
4. Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners
5. Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping
How will I be assessed'
You will be assessed using the following methods:
Natural observation (being watched whilst carrying out certain tasks)
Documentary evidence (written work prepared by you on the course)
Historic evidence (work prepared by you prior to the course)
Pre Course Preparation
You will be required to carry out an amount of pre-course work. This will enable us to evaluate and identify your strengths and weaknesses at an early stage and to offer a greater level of support to you during the 5 days you are with us. The pre-coursework required is not difficult and a minimum of 30 hours should be spent on the preparation. You will be required to complete a work diary (appendix a) and this will form part of your assessment and portfolio.
Assessment 1
Candidates should submit a written assessment that meets the following assessment criteria:
▪ Review what your actual or perceived role, responsibilities and boundaries are as a teacher in terms of the teaching cycle.
▪ Summarise key aspects of legislative requirements and codes of practice that directly impact on your teaching.
▪ Summarise key aspects of legislative requirements and codes of practice that directly impact on your learning environment.
Assessment 2
Candidates should submit a written assessment that meets the following assessment criteria:
▪ Analyse different ways to establish ground rules with learners.
▪ Justify how ground rules underpin appropriate behaviour and respect for others.
▪ Evaluate and justify the types of resources available to meet the potential needs of your learners.
▪ Identify any other organisations which may be used as a referral point to meet the potential needs of the learners and review the benefits.
Assessment 3
Candidates should submit a written assessment which meets the following assessment criteria:
▪ Discuss issues of equality, diversity and ways to promote inclusion within the classroom environment.
▪ Evaluate a range of ways to embed functional skills or elements of functional skills within your delivered sessions.
Assessment 4
Candidates should submit a written assessment that meets the following assessment criteria:
▪ Evaluate the three main types of assessments used and justify explain how you conduct, an initial assessment of learners.
▪ Explain how you utilise assessment methods.
▪ Justify the importance and the requirements of keeping records including those relating to assessment.
Assessment 5
Candidates should prepare, deliver and participate in micro-teaching. The essential
requirements of this assessment are:
▪ Produce a Scheme of Work for a minimum of four sessions (your micro-teach lesson is one of them)
▪ Produce a Session Plan for your 30 minute micro-teach session.
▪ Use a range of teaching and learning approaches which engage and motivate the learners effectively.
▪ Demonstrate effective communication with learners.
▪ Observe a micro-teach session delivered by a member of your cohort and provide positive feedback.
Assessment 6
Candidates should submit a written document which meets the following assessment criteria:
▪ Justify your selection of teaching and learning approaches.
▪ Review and evaluate your choice of resources for your delivered session.
▪ Explain how you gave constructive feedback.
▪ Explain how you will use the feedback received to improve your teaching in the future.
Candidate Notes
1. There are no specific word counts for the assessments. However, candidates must
ensure that the assessment criteria are fully met.
2. All written assessments must be correctly referenced using the Harvard referencing system.
Facilities and Dress Code'
We want you to enjoy your time spent on the PTLLS course and for you to gain as much from the course as possible. We strongly believe that the comfort of our students plays a significant role in making this achievable and strive to accomplish complete customer satisfaction.
Your comfort during tutorials is also important to us. During tutorial periods you may wear smart, casual attire. We do, however, expect students to represent their industry well and portray the appropriate image to others, therefore, jeans, collar-less tee shirts and training shoes will not form part of the casual dress code. During the delivery of your lessons (Micro Teach) you will be expected to demonstrate your ability to present yourself in a smart, professional manner and will be required to wear smart business attire:
Male Students – Suit or blazer, trousers, shirt, tie and shoes.
Female Students – Suit jacket, trousers/skirt, blouse and shoes.
Hot beverages provided during break periods are included in the course costs. A buffet lunch can be provided at a cost of £20.00p per student for the duration of the course, or food is available locally.
Candidates are requested to bring their own laptop computer and memory stick/flash drive with at least 2 Gb for individual work whilst on the course and to amend any of your pre-course work.
Directions and Course programme
Please find at “ Annex A “ directions to the training facility with the Post Code and at “ Annex B “ the course programme for the week. At “ Annex C “ you will find a pre-course journal sheet. This will need to be photocopied so that you can record your time spent, and what you did prior to attending the course. These sheets will also form part of your portfolio and will give your tutor an idea of area’s that you may have had difficulties in.
