• Data Protection
• EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES
• Equality
• Diversity
• Inclusion
Why is this important when teaching (theory')
Health and safety at work etc Act 1974(amended 1992)
Often referred to as HASAW or HSW, this Act of Parliament is the main piece of UK health and safety legislation. It places a duty on all employers "to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work" of all their employees.
Among other provisions, the Act also requires:
• safe operation and maintenance of the working environment
• maintenance of safe access and egress to the workplace
• safe use, handling and storage of dangerous substances
• adequate training of staff to ensure health and safety
• Adequate welfare provisions for staff at work.
Employers must also keep and revise a written record of health and safety policy and consult with employees or their representatives on such policies (this only applies to those employing five or more.
Employees must work safely in accordance with their training and instructions given to them. Employees must also notify the employer or the person responsible for health and safety of any serious or immediate danger to health and safety or any shortcoming in health and safety arrangements.
COSHH is the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health. You can prevent or reduce workers' exposure to hazardous substances by:
• finding out what the health hazards are;
• deciding how to prevent harm to health (risk assessment);
• providing control measures to reduce harm to health;
• making sure they are used ;
• keeping all control measures in good working order;
• providing information, instruction and training for employees and others;
• providing monitoring and health surveillance in appropriate cases;
• Planning for emergencies.
Most businesses use substances, or products that are mixtures of substances. Some processes create substances. These could cause harm to employees, contractors and other people.
Sometimes substances are easily recognised as harmful. Common substances such as paint, bleach or dust from natural materials may also be harmful
Data protection Act 1998: All organisations that hold personal information about living identifiable people data subject must comply with the data protection Act 1998.The act covers photographs, CCTV footage, both computerised and manually held information. Respecting the data protection rights of individuals.
Equal opportunities. Means providing equal access to opportunities not equal treatment.
INCLUSION: The identity of every learner must be valued and help given to overcome learning barriers they may have. The needs of the learner must be identified and referral information given to help overcome these. For example if there are financial/travel issues or extra learning support required the learner would be referred to the Learner Support Service within the College where they would be able to offer help and guidance to insure that the learner felt they were being included within the group. At no time should any learner feel they are being excluded in any way for any reason.
EQUILITY: Every learner should have access to the course regardless of gender, race, age, religion or disability. To ensure that no learner is disadvantaged or discriminated against enrolment forms, group discussions, assessments and Individual Learning Plans should be used. The learning environment should be somewhere that everyone is treated as individuals, equals and with respect. An example of equality would listening and considering everyone’s views and encouraging others to do the same, also giving my own considered view with reasons. Including everyone in the debates, considering carefully who I might ask a question in open for (I don’t want to humiliate someone who is struggling).
DIVERSITY: The methods used to teach a subject should take into account every students learning abilities and learning preferences. The environment should be adapted to promote diversity within the group. For example, tables could be moved to relate to the activity so that learners as various levels sit together. Everyone is different and learns at a different pace and this should be respected. Lesson plans should be written to offer diversity within the teaching using various activities, such as theory, group work, practical activities or inviting guest speakers in to talk to the group to give a more diverse approach
What will I do when I am teaching, as a result (practice)'
Promoting Equality, Diversity Inclusion and respect for others.
The prison service believes that its organisational needs and goals are best served by recognising the diverse background of its workforce. It supports the principal of equal opportunities in employment and opposes all forms of unlawful of unfair discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, nationality, sexual orientation, age or disability. Individuals should be treated equally and fairly and treated with respect. Insulting and derogatory language is not tolerated and discrimination and harassment of any kind is unacceptable. To ensure this we make frequent use of compacts and agreements within the Service to reinforce this issue. As an Instructor it is my duty to warn prisoners when their behaviour steps outside the boundaries of acceptable behaviour and where necessary bring disciplinary procedures into play, for example, issuing an IEP strike or placing the prisoner on report. I would also bring his behaviour to the attention of the race relations officer, his personal officer and make record of it on his personal file.
I have to work within the rules, regulations and guidelines set down in the Prison Service Orders (PSO) and Prison Service Instructions (PSI). These govern every aspect of prison regime and security. The main ones I have to consider are:
PSO 0100 Prison Rules
PSO 1000 National Security Website
PSO1215 Professional Standards
PSO 1500 Incident Reporting
PSO 1702 Anti Bullying Strategy
PSO 2700 Suicide and Self Harm
PSO 2800 Race Equality
PSO 2855 Prisoners with Disabilities
PSO 3801 Health and Safety
PSO 3803 Fire Safety
PSO 8010 Equal Opportunities
Furthermore, I must ensure that prisoners in the workshop, fellow staff members and visitors adhere to Health and Safety regulations provide by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and current legislation (e.g. The Management of Health and Safety At Work Regulations; Workplace Health and Safety and Welfare Regulations; Personal Protection at Work Regulations; Manual Handling Operation Regulations; Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations etc.) And that all daily activities and behaviour is in line with current Diversity and Equal Opportunity policies.
