Assignment 1
Roles, responsibilities and relationships in lifelong learning.
It is the responsibility of the teacher / trainer to ensure that they know what
they are going to teach, and to be knowledgeable in the topic that they are
going to teach. Be aware of the level of student you are going to teach and
plan accordingly. Offer any help appropriate to the student’s needs. Assess the
learning.
This can be summed up using Gravells teaching and learning cycle 2012 Gravells 2012 ,p10
Identifying needs- Before a student comes on a princes trust program they
firstly get an initial interview, where the course will be fully described to the
student so the student can decide if it is suitable for them. If suitable they are
invited to a second interview where we find out more about the student. E.g.
is there any barrier to the students learning such as disability, funding etc. We
will also get the student to fill in a personal information form where they give
us confidential information regarding mental illness, anger issues, drug misuse.
We then use this information to formulate a personal risk assessment for each
student so we can address any of these issues before they arise.
Planning learning- Effective planning for learning will involve having a suitable
session plan that is clear in its aims, objectives and outcomes. It is important
that all materials needed for session are available on the day, or have a back
a back up plan. A risk assessment needs to be carried out on class room to
make sure it is safe and suitable for purpose, also a personal risk assessment
will be carried out on individuals using any information they have divulged to
us e.g. mental health issues, anger management, so that we can manage a
situation before it develops
Facilitating learning- To carry this out effectively it is important that the tutor
communicates with students at a level appropriate to the learner. Also we
need to set ground rules so that the learners know what is acceptable
behaviour. It is important that we keep accurate records of learning so that a
comparison of the individual students learning can be made at set times, so
we can tell how the learner is performing compared to their past performance
and to see how the learner is performing in relation to their peers .Records
that must be kept are :- attendance, so we have a record of when students
were absent then we know what they have missed.
Records of what was taught
on each day , again so we know what a learner has missed.
Assessing learning-
This is where we assess to see if we as a tutor have facilitated learning
effectively. It allows us to assess the progress of a learner against their past
performance. From this assessment we can give feedback to learner so that we
can improve their learning. It is good practice to keep records of assessment so
that they can be referred back to at future assessment to check on learners
progress.
Quality assurance and evaluation- This section of Gravells cycle is where we
evaluate how well the program was planned and delivered. To see if anything
can be improved to improve the learning process. This can be done in several ways:-
By obtaining feedback from the learner is good, as you get direct information
of how a session has gone. Also by evaluating each session as it is completed to
see if all aim and objectives have been met.
Specific legislation to my role-
Equality and diversity is important to effective teaching and learning.
Equality is about the right of a student to attend, participate in their chosen
learning experience. This is regardless of age, gender ,religion, ethnicity,
sexuality or ability. All students will be given equal opportunities to achieve their goal.
• Equality act 2010
Effects mainly recruitment. My responsibility to choose a team regardless of race ,gender, disability, religion or sexual orientation.
• Health and safety at work act 1974
Apart from carrying out your example I have to do a risk assessment on all students due to the circumstances that our students may be in. to ensure the student is not a risk in themselves or other students. It gives me the knowledge to deal with a potentially difficult student before any problems arise.
• COSHH Regulations 2002.
I need to ensure that all substances used on projects are coshh assessed, and put in place relevant safeguards via risk assessment.
On residential trips I must make sure as Team leader that no substance other than approved substances are taken on the residential trip.
• Data protection act 1985, amended 2003.
It is my duty to ensure all information given is confidential, between student and team leaders.
• First aid at work regs
State that as there is potentially high risk on a team that we must be first aid trained.
• Safeguarding vulnerable adults.
As a trainer of vulnerable adults it is required that I have had safe guarding
training to be able to spot danger signs of abuse etc.
It is important to promote and maintain a safe working environment to enable learners to learn effectively. This includes not only the room or resources but your attitude and teaching style, which would effect how a learner responds. If all the above is carried out then you should automatically achieve this.
‘If you can develop the conditions for learning theatre based on respect and trust and address the needs of individual learners you will have created a suitable learning environment’
