Explain how you could promote inclusion, equality and diversity with your learners. Identify other points of referral available to meet the potential needs of learners. Within the college we actively promote an 'Every child matters' policy. Learners are accepted onto a course with us on their own merit. We do not discriminate against race, background, sexuality, ability or behaviour. Many of our learners have some kind of issue as the majority of them have come from schools because they have behavioural , personal issues or are not meeting their targets for other reasons. This can be learners from both sides. Someone being bullied for example may come here because he/she is truanting from school. Also learners from the other side of this example may come here so by taking them away from the situation could improve both learners chances of achieving. We have very mixed learners within a group e.g.: * Male or female mixed classes. * Learners whose first language is not English. * Learners with learning difficulties such as Dyslexia, below key stage level reading and writing skills for their age and poor communication skills. * Race or Ethnic background. * Learners with behaviour problems as severe as ADHD and ADD or Young Offenders. * Learners with medical conditions such as Epilepsy, Diabetes or Asthma. When a new learner joins a group it is important to understand why they are there and what we can do to assist them. We work alongside the Key workers to decide the best approach and apply this to their learning. This should ensure the learner has a better chance or opportunity to achieve the best results they can. If a leaner has a learning difficulty it is important we can identify this early on in order for us to offer help and support where possible, such as a scribe or other learning aids. Medical conditions are an obvious concern. We have to make sure we understand what it is and if there is anything we can put in place to stop it triggering. Health and Safety is paramount when dealing with learners in this age group in a Vocational environment. There are strict procedures in place to deal with medication and medical emergencies. Because of the type of courses we offer, it is often thought a male dominated area. We actively encourage females onto our courses as we believe that females can achieve as well mentally and physically. The Key workers sit alongside learners in both practical and class room based sessions. They are there to assist the support and emotional needs of the learners and will work directly with the Tutors, other organisations and parents when necessary. They will also help to obtain outside help such as translators or would help to obtain referrals for things like counselling, medical advice or organisations which would help further assist their individual needs. Our courses are intense and it is important to build a relationship with the learners as quickly as possible in order to help them to achieve their best potential.
